What is the standard deviation of those averages?

It's stat geek thing. Standard deviation gives you an idea of the process spread of the data points. We use it daily in verifying manufacturing processes but I've been using it the past 12 months to monitor my league conditions in the 80's game.

Basically, if you have Excel, you can copy/paste your league hitting and pitching stats into it. As an example, click the cell at the bottom of the ERA category and then press the function button on the tool bar. You'll be asked what function you want - choose STD DEV and then click and drag the cells that contain all 12 teams' ERA Averages. Press Enter.

That's the standard deviation of the average of the averages in your league. That number represents separation from nominal (league average) for ERA on a Bell Curve.

And now I just realized that it's going to take me at least 2 more pages to explain how I use this information to make decisions in the 80's game. LOL Seriously though, if you are interested in these types of thoughts, send me a PM. I've got some of these explanations written out and I'll be able to copy and paste the info back to you.

If you have Eck, why would you only use in saves situtations. Go to agressive relief and take all the setting off Eck except max IP. He should be used in blowout, close ones everything. There is no reason he cannot pitch 150 innings. If if you;re losing having Eck stop the other team from scroing is worth it. Playing for 'saves' is playing to lose. The save is a worthless stat. better to track holds and blown saves than stupid saves. If he is your best, wear his freakin' arm off!

BJ just trrack the normalized ERA for your team (ERP+), but it can be even easier, just try to have your team pitching around or below the league average.

ERA+ will give you what you need (LERA/ERA)*100. Over 100 is good below is bad.

While that is good, I use STD Deviation to help me make decision on whether I should keep or waive an indidvidual.

I haven't been to school for a while but when you talk about standard deviations that means something like 68% of all stats will be within one standard deviation of the average and 85% within two standard deviations?

Close but you are on target.

68.2% within one standard deviation. 95.4% within two deviations. Really gives you a good perspective on what is good enough at certain positions.

Last night, just BJ was a GEEK. Now, RIGGED, YF and BJ are GEEKS !! You children frighten me !!! Why the heck weren't you out late at night, driving fast, drinking heavy and scoping/scoring chicks when you were in high school and college?

I look at standard deviation similar to YF, but with a twist. If (LERA/ERA)*100 > 1, I have too much pitching, and go pick up a stud HR hitter off waivers

If (LERA/ERA)*100 < 1, it must be one of Sean's teams.

In ERA and WHIP, two of my championship teams were over 1, and two were under 1.

All four of my championship teams were over 1 in BA, OBP and SLG

what do you think that means?

In high school I was afraid of chicks (and I still am). In college I changed majors from math to poker. There was no time for anything else, except beer.
