Dusty Baker - Juicy Goodness or Poo Pile?

Postby rutkap » Sat Apr 15, 2006 7:16 pm

Just want to see what everyone else thinks of him.

FWIW - I have never used him but it looks like his card is decent, it is just about 1M too expensive - If you can get over overpaying a bit, It isn't so bad...

Never Used Him

Postby bjs73 » Sat Apr 15, 2006 7:30 pm

I think he's too expensive too. However, YountFan has used him several times. Do a search on this forum for a topic I started called "Database Tricks and Gifts" or something like that. YountFan has a real good database of performance per card on several players in that thread. You can download it from the link.

Some of his numbers in that database look pretty good.

Big, stinking, pile of POO!!
May very well be the most overpriced card in the set.
He should be about the same price as Gary Matthews.

I have never used him, but I puts up some good numbers. If he was 5M priced I'd be used more. But he can produce and he is not a stink pile. If he played RF he'd be more valuable.

Here are the numbers I have. There are good, but don't count the seasons he was dropped

As has been indicated already several times above, he's overpriced--or at least he seems to be.

It's possible his cards are better than his stats because the stats are depressed by having played all his years in Dodger. On the face of it, 6.44M for even a good defensive LF is a lot to pay given a .809 overall OPS. YF's stats certainly appear to suggest that he frequently outperforms his card and thus might be worth a second look. I haven't used Baker but I have found that other Dodger Stadium regulars tend to outperform their cards in most seasons....but don't let that get around. :D

Well Rutkap...I think I traded Dusty to you, so I'm going to post the 2 teams that I had him on. Both times I went to Dusty as a back-up option, so neither of these is a full season:

'77 Dusty:

'81 Dusty:

As you can see, both times he was an animal...in Dodger Stadium of all places!! Overpriced...yes, I think so still, but he can deliver.

Good Numbers

Postby bjs73 » Sun Apr 16, 2006 7:03 am

But it still astounds me that he's more expensive than Strawberry and Rice and is basically in the same class as Raines.

It's all just wrong.

(But I'd take those numbers that you got every time.) :P

Completely overpriced

Postby honestiago1 » Mon May 01, 2006 3:09 pm

for a LF. The only reason to get him is if you're moving him into a hitter's park. He is a very good all around player, but you'd want superstar production out of him. If he were a switch hitter, he'd be worth every penny.

jimmy, Dusty has not been a poo pile by any stretch. So far he has been hitting at a .415 clip, with an ops of 1.116 so far, not too shabby - he has been one of 3 bright spots on this team that has transformed greatly over the last week and a half...
