Joyner versus Driessen

I am playing in the Astrodome, focusing on pitching and defense. I currently have Driessen, but Joyner is available. Driessen walks more, has more speed, and makes fewer errors (2e7). Joyner gives me a 1e10, with no stolen base potential, fewer walks, but a higher slugging pct. His BP HR's are not overly pervasive (though the Dome hurts everybody except singles hitters). Joyner is also better at moving up runners than Driessen.

Driessen better fits my philosophy of running, but Joyner (hopefully) would give me a more dangerous bat in opponent's parks, and would still be able to bunt/H&R in the dome (as well as more extra base hits). He was a line drive hitter, which is reflected in his card quite well. I'd be sacrificing OBP, though (depending on the year I get).

I'm truly conflicted, but favoring Driessen at this point. How has he or Joyner fared for you guys?

For my money, it would be Joyner. He's better than Driessen at just about everything but OBP and speed.

But Joyner's OBP is also good--Driessen's edge is rather slight. Joyner has a much bigger edge in SLG. Driessen's running edge is even slighter--a "B" stealer will nab a few bases, but nothing to write home about. You've got plenty of other guys who can steal bases but you could use a line drive hitter who can pop a few homers, like Joyner. Beyond the park issues, I just think that Joyner's the better overall player. Joyner also has a big season on his card (.894 OPS.) No such big seasons for Driessen. His best OPS is lower than Joyner's 2nd best. There's also a coolness factor in having 3 "1's" in the infield.

So if you can afford the extra cash--and you can-- I'd definitely take Joyner. Just my two cents...

Astrodome, I'd take Joyner.

Jack Murphy or Kingdome, I'd take Driessen.

Those are good points. I'll definitely consider it. Still like the fact that Driessen has to be held on, which feeds into H&R. Also, though he's a B stealer, his ratings are 17-12 (gets jump on 4-6). He should get me 20 SB's over the course or a year. Finally, ol' Driessen did pop 4 doubles and a dinger in his first three games. This may be a fluke, but I might want to wait to see if I have his .300 year, or one of his high OBP years (I still like the 3 of walks he has, which will help drain pitches from starters).

So, we'll see.
