NLD 13 Draft thread

I can only wonder how bad my team would be if I didnt have a large # of 1 range fielders ... :(

Made some changes - hopefully that will have some effect.

HAL?

Where are you?

You did a great job last night messing with the bullpen. Please do it again!

I found HAL again.

Of course, HAL decided to pull Pedro in the 8th inning (90 pitches tossed) after he whiffed ten (10) batters, walked zero (0), and yielded three (3) hits.

But he went back to his strange days ways and allowed Haren to toss away for 9 innings in a losing effort.

WHY WHY WHY

Conservative settings on Pedro and normal settings on Haren.

semper,

Hal pulled pedro because you had closer set to maximize and you were in a 1-0 game.

As for haren, leaving him in in the 7th with a conservative pen isn't too surprising because you had 2 out and only a man at first. The 8th? that one's a little more puzzling. In a 2-1 game with a guy on 2nd with one out, you'd figure the pen was in order. The only thing I can think of there is that since you're on conservative and you probably don't have Haren set to "avoid LH" it let him go. Bad move to be sure.

I defintely think there is something in the engine, similar to the HR thing was saw a couple years back that tries to balance the IP and saves for the pitchers. There's just no other logical explanation for pulling guys in the 4th inning after giving up a leadoff single. Hal does that A LOT.

Bernies response on the other thread made sense to me. And I learned something that I didnt know, but probably should have.

"Defining someone as your Setup man will bring him in in "setup situations" pretty much automatically. Setting your Relief usage to Conservative will indeed bring in relievers less often, but it will [b:3cccfbaa7c]not[/b:3cccfbaa7c] interfere with your Setup man designation."

Joe,

I know something is wrong with the pitching logic. :x

My settings are

Manager Strategy: Conservative Relief / [b:e5312db4eb]Normal Closer Rule[/b:e5312db4eb]

I have Wagner set as my Set-Up / Closer [b:e5312db4eb]BUT he doesn't always come in to reliever my "pulled" starter.[/b:e5312db4eb] I usually see Politte or Riske coming into the game around the 6th and 7th innings.

I have Wagner set not to appear before the 8th inning which worked in the example I provided Bernie.

Despite the explanation provided by Bernie, I know the engine is off its tracks. Using very conservative settings, I've had HAL remove Wagner after tossing to one batter as well as Prior getting pulled after tossing a no-hitter for 6 and 7 innings.

If you look at Pedro's results, would you pull him before the 11th inning ever?

TSN needs to understand the coding and disclose it to us. Same story with the power / slugging issue.

I deal with regression analysis every day of my working week. I know when the numbers look off their trend lines and I've played this game long enough to see bad code at play.

What I find troubling - I'm complaining the most and my examples have been where my team wins!

So, I'll need to remove the "set-up" man setting to get my just desserts.

Summer Clean-Up

Postby Semper Gumby » Fri May 05, 2006 2:08 pm

Took the broom to my team and tossed out some trash.

I know a few of the unemployed players were victims of bad dice such as DeJesus. I expected him to hit quite a few more doubles and reach base more often than he had done for me over 60 games.

Unfortunately, little OBP, no slugging, plenty of strikeouts, and no speed ain't gonna keep you in the MLB at PETCO.

Of course, I know a few of my employed players are playing above their cards and they'll hit the ground soon. I noticed my OBP increasing over the past 15 games with the addition of Tyner and Taguchi to the everyday line-up.

With Johnson and Walker missing some 22 games between them, I thought grabbing Jeff Kent might pay dividends if he can hit a few more HRs than DeJesus.

Otherwise, I have a good feeling about Helms' card in case Johnson decides to take another vacation.

As for Cliff Lee, I liked his card but Robertson outpitch him on every split besides BB/K ratio. I know Woods will flame up on me but I sense he'll be good for my mop-up needs and a spot start.

Hey Semper,

Can you post the link (or tell me the name) of the forum where bernie posted his explanations?

I agree with you that there is something going on as there are too many unexplained circumstances.

Thanks,

Joe,

It is in the main forum and I believe it is a sticky element posting.

I know something is wrong with the engine. I had HAL yank a few SPs in my 80s league (these cards are the best year variants) last night for no reason.

I want to say HAL pulled one of my starters earlier last night again and I didn't have WAGNER locked in as my "set-up".

Does HAL dislike complete games?

Oddly, Pedro has one of the best stats for pitching and he doesn't lead our league in complete games.
