[quote:512d44ffe9="bunze0"]i look at it this way. in my case, musial dom and cuyler not so bad. or cuyler, dom and cobb?? hmmmmmmmmm[/quote:512d44ffe9]

I have Musual, Meusel, Cuyler, and Cobb.

And can't pull off a trade to get better in my middle IF. I just grabbed Gantner. I'll resurrext this thread if I make the playoffs with him.

Speaking to PJ's post, I ALWAYS reply to trade offers, even those I am not remotely interested in. Just seems like good manners. Besides, even if the trade is a NO WAY for you, why slam the door in someone's face? Later on in the season, you may WANT to make a deal with that same owner. And, so many of us play against the same owners in multiple leagues, it seems wise to keep detente at positive levels. Again, I love to trade. The best trades are when both owners get something they want/need. I don't have problems giving up a beloved player, AS LONG as the deal is addressing a team need I have. However, I have to say, I am amazed at the number of (IMO) one way deals thrown my way. When I am offered Lamp for Konstanty, or Luderus for Chance, straight up, in pre-season, I wonder WHAT the offerer thinks I am getting out of the deal, other than cash? Still, I respond courteously. Maybe they've seen my post-season record and figure I am a sucker waiting to be hooked. :)

Mark,

You hit both items right on the head ...

First, I always try to respond. If I don't really know the sender, I keep it polite and thank them for the offer. If I know the sender a little better, it's usually a sarcastic reply but a reply none the less.

Second, I too am amazed at some of the offers I get. I honestly don't know what people are thinking when they offer Jesse Barfield for Ty Cobb???

I, too, always try to respond - even if it's just with a quick "No Thanks". Sometimes I explain my reasoning; sometimes I counter-offer.

On occasion, though, I read a trade offer when I don't have the time to respond immediately (I read the morning box scores while riding a stationary bike when typing is tough to do, and usually check again before leaving for/from the office when I'm usually pressed for time). With 15-20 active teams, a "Save As New" option for league mailboxes would help me in not forgetting a pending inquiry.

I always figured it was better to just decline--that way the person ofering the trade can get on with his business. It;s not like it's anything personal.

I ALWAYS give at least a simple response. I hate it when I just get a decline, or, as Nev mentioned nothing at all. The first trade offer should/could be the beginning of a dialogue. If I have no desire to trade at all, at least common courtesy should dictate that I let the other owner know that.

I understand the player position factor in turning down a deal.

I just offered Stan for Ozzie.

Not meaning as a put down on my league mate at all, but we'll see what happens. He has Gehringer and Ozzie, and has had a death grip on them that Cobb and Stan haven't been able to loosen.

I'm hoping going after only one will leave him a questionable spot in his order, but replace Eddie Murray with Stan is a bigger bonus, IMO.

Sorry, but I wouldn't take that trade, not if I already had Murray. Heck, most of the time, Ozzie is at the top of my draft list.

Trade Etiquette

Postby DizandMiles » Sat May 06, 2006 6:37 pm

Always respond and do not be afraid to respond if you feel a bit insulted to share that feeling - such as the Banks deal mentioned earlier
I try to balance out trades -at least in terms of positions, etc... unless I know the player in question (that I am offering) is highly regarded by my trading partner.
It is fun to try to wiggle trades under the cap structure, and if a team is floundering I am a true believer in changing venues - it has worked for me and against me in my 10 seasons -
By the way - I like Musial and Muesel, but with Stargell, Mays and Selkirk and Cooper I flat out did not need a LF/1B that would take out my middle infielder - there was no upside for me in that deal -
Something like Cobb, Musial and Concepcion and Tippy for Banks, Cooper and Selkirk and Taylor might have sparked more interest. I would get minor upgrades in Right Major at First, BK would get huge jump at Short

I'd have had interest - don't know if I'd pull the trigger....
