Management Minutia...

Postby Hooverg » Sat May 06, 2006 8:02 pm

I am a longtime (read OLDtime, LOL) board guy on SOM...this is my first crack at the online version. I feel--after my third league--that I have the draft and waivers aspect wired. I'm also an old coach, and can build a great lineup and order. But the whole "what's your home park" thing has me completely flumoxed...and HAS to be what's going on with me: in my first two leagues, I am at weird odds with my guy's cards. The first league I have a great offense--but my team is hitting like .215. In the second league I have a really killer starting staff and bullpen, but have given up more runs than anyone in the league.

Can someone give me some basic metrics on the whole aspect of picking your players to your park: i.e., how is it actually played on the card, etc etc etc

Thanks!

In a nutshell it is the BPHR symbols (#) on the cards. The more there are on the pitcher's cards the lower the value of the player. If you play at Kaufman Stadium or PETCO where the BPHR chances are around 1 then you can go get pitchers that have several BPHR symbols on their card but otherwise have few hits and walks. If you play at Coors Stadium where the BPHR chances are great then you want pitchers that may give up more singles and walks but have few or no BPHR symbols on their cards.

The exact opposite is true of your hitters. Also don't be afraid to take players that were part time players. You are spending money on the cards not the player's names. How good of a real player someone is has no bearing on if you would want them on your SOM team.

Some players that only had 100 ABs have great SOM cards and are better 2006 SOM players than many established quality real players.

Hooverq,

There is a thread for newbies on the main board which will explain alot of stuff you will be asking. It helped answer several questions for me when I started last year.

As far as Ballparks go, each one is (don't quote me) based on past 5 years stats at that park giving it a rating.

Coors heavy hitters park
Petco a pitchers park

Coors you will want cheap starting pitching with few to no BPHR strong relief and lots of hitting, obp and slg pct are important here as I am learning right now.

Petco Hard to hit homers here, so you will concentrate on Pitching and make sure you have plenty of guys getting on base because runs are a premium here. A strong natural homerun hitter or two won't hurt either.

Don't forget the other teams in your division either, you will have to take that into consideration when drafting as well since you will play there alot as well.

Check out the Newbie thread and it should help out quite a bit

Except you won't know the other parks in your division when you fill out your draft card. :? For all you know they will be using the exact same park as you. Draft for your park first. After the draft if you have to make a few modifications to fit better at other parks then do that then.

I was under the impression he had already drafted.

Hooverq- the newbie advice thread is under STRATEGY in the Strat-o Area on the message boards.

Thanks guys...I am taking pretty much all of what you say into consideration, so maybe I just need to let the dice work their magic! I was just thinking that there might be some magic pill I was missing...

I appreciate you taking the time to help out!

In both cases (Coors / Petco), you still need good defense up the middle.
