I love this thread! Trivia: Although a successful general in the Civil War and in the Southwest after the war, what is Lew Wallace primarily known for today?

I don't think so. It's a National Park in Tennessee very near the battle site of Shiloh I believe. If I read it correctly they were only a few days apart.

The 1st NE infantry spent the early part of the war in SE Missouri, Arkansas, TN and served under Grant in the battle for Ft Donelson. Later in the war they became a calvary unit and moved back to the western plains (NE-CO) border to suppress an indian uprising.

Geezer--That would be---Wallace became very wealthy and famous for writting the novel "Ben Hur". :D

I always get Forts Henry and Donelson mixed up. Can't remember in which order they fell or on which rivers they are located (Tennesee and Cumberland Rivers... right?)

Ft Henry is on the Tennessee River and Donelson on the Cunberland..An interesting tidbit.......... At Fort Donelson--How is this for a sorry commander...With the Rebs in trouble and besieged by Grant the Confederate Commander's General John Floyd and Gen. Gideon Pillow left during the night and left 11,000 + troops to the Unions disposal..What a couple of sorry dudes (I actually had a couple of CO's like that myself..LOL)...........Which brings on the next trivia question:

At Ft Donelson After the infamous Generals ran for their lives the Forts command was turned over to General Buckner...In return,, Buckner asked for surrender terms with Grant and Grant replied with what :?:

Hint: His first and middle names became usually substituted by this phrase when referring to Grant.
