Diamond dope

Diamond dope

Postby CHRISTIANSTOUGH » Mon May 08, 2006 8:10 pm

I checked out diamond dope and I'm trying to make sense out of all this madness.
I'll start with the numbers of pitchers in the Atrodome.

Went to player pool; opened up the Astrodome stats; it gives me the read out on (percentages? or/of probability?) 1b,2b,3b,hr, bb,hbp, vs. lefty and righty.
How do I quantify this stuff in order to figure out who is a better bargain in the Astrodome.

For example, should I multiply BB by .75, 1b by 1, 2b by 2, 3b by 3 hr by 4, then add them all together and compare?

What do you guys do with this stuff?

My head hurts

Is their a link i can click that says, "guys who kick butt in the Asttrodome" and then ranks them by position?
Must I go back to Math school to figure this stuff out?

The best way to get a true idea of what they do and how they overperform or underperform, I check the boards and ask questions, because I don't really know what I'm doing :)

That said, when I use DiamondDope's pool, I save the information to an Excel file, and then for the pitchers I create a formula to calculate how many BB, Hits, & HBP each pitcher creates in that park(kind of like WHIP, but without the IP stat). Then I create a formula to calculate Total Bases a pitcher allows in that park. I do that versus LH, Versus RH, and a total vs Both(add LH & RH and divide by 2). Then I give more weight to the stat that is more important in a given stadium. In Astrodome, I'd say WHIP is more important---in Fenway 67, i'd say Total BAses was more important.

THEN, after all those fun statistical excercises, I then post questions or send a PM and do whatever the experienced Strat player says, regardless of the time I've wasted on my brilliant statistical analysis.

The player pool will give you the raw numbers for singles, doubles, walks, etc for every player against lefties and righties. You can then use those numbers to figure out batting average, slugging, on base, runs created, batting runs, or any other stat you want to compile.

I like batting runs, myself.

It does help to paste the data into a spreadsheet. You wouldn't be able to make heads or tails of it otherwise.

For more information on how to figure those things out, you can check out
the help link.

Spread sheet? That is what my wife does before she makes the bed. The little "sweetie" spreads two sheets then "makes the bed."

I tip my hat to the "number crunchin "nerds" :?: The "number crunchin` nerds" are the future and the future is ....NOW.

Plus, they win. :!:

Honey, where is the ....aspirin :?:

Does the card reader do about the same thing? I usually use that, then ask questions..and finally guess..

The card reader gives you Batting Runs, Runs Created per 27 outs, BA, OBP, and SLG in addition to the raw numbers adjusted by whatever park you choose. But you can only look at that one player at a time.

The pool has the raw numbers, but you can see everybody at once.
