I Did Not Know This! Imp. info on RP settings!

For what its worth I remember Lucky once posting the SAME EXACT theme that Qk has passed along here -- that the setting controls the use of the Relievers and has nothing to do with the starters, despite the rather misleading comment TSN includes in the Manager Strategy section:[quote:40be5eacbb]how much your bullpen is called in to help[/quote:40be5eacbb]

Thank you for bringing this up!

I have built most of my teams under the same assumption as many of you...I had solid starters and a cheap pen, and set the settings for "Conservative", thinking that affected "how much your bullpen is called in to help"...

I'm confused, like many of you...

but it also seems that, when set to "normal"...HAL would too often pull a starter who, for example, had allowed two hits and a walk in four shutout innings...quite baffling, and certainly not what I would have done...so to compensate for that, I went for the "conservative" setting, and began building my teams around that (as I said, strong starters and cheap pen)...

It sure would be nice if this was written down somewhere: what the settings actually mean...

let's keep the discussion going on this...those who "don't agree", please chime in with more details...this is a huge issue...

Until Bernie or someone tells us otherwise, I'm going with what qk described above, that basically the decision to go to the pen would be somewhat affected by the setting, but "aggressive" mostly will cause HAL to maximize every possible matchup.

I can say that when I have a strong deep pen set to "aggressive", that HAL does not only do this, he plays that deep pen like a damned virtuoso.

[quote:05fff26a1b]I read the manual back in '02 when I 1st got the CD-ROM. Not sure I have it now[/quote:05fff26a1b]The only clue in the help files as to what the "relief usage" setting does is this chart:

[code:1:05fff26a1b]RELIEF USAGE

To determine Using Relief settings divide Saves/Wins and refer to the chart below:

SAVES/WINS SETTING COMMENTS
.000-.275 EXTRA CONSERV Pre-WWII, maximize cg's, no
closer
.276-.350 CONSERVATIVE 1940's-1960's, many cg's, may use
closer
.351-.450 NORMAL 1950's-1970's, balance cg's and
closer
.451-.575 AGGRESSIVE 1960's-1990's, emphasize closer,
few cg's
.576 + VERY AGGRESS 1980's-1990's, heavy emphasis on
closer

CG's refer to complete games.[/code:1:05fff26a1b]
If I had to guess based on that, I would guess that the setting applies only to the starter; it seems to be based on a (strange) understanding that either you throw a complete game or bring in the closer, and doesn't seem to be talking about middle relievers, IMO. But I honestly don't know.

Quick/slow hook is defined as:[quote:05fff26a1b]Quick/slow hook - A quick hook means you'll have less patience with this pitcher when he gets into trouble. A slow hook means you're willing to stick with him longer. Typically you might want to quick hook the lousy pitchers on your team and slow hook your ace.[/quote:05fff26a1b]

Thanks Dean.

It seems like Bernie should weigh in on such an important issue. Can you add anything to this Bernie?

What qksilver stated is not accurate.

His clarification that the Agg./Normal/Conserv. relief usage setting has nothing to do with the computer considering starters tired is correct, but it DOES affect how quick the hook is on your starters in general.

The section of the CD-ROM game's help files that Dean quoted is enlightening, because it mentions CG's, which is a dead give-away that the settings do affect the SP hook. It also brings up an important clarification I should make:

Our 3 relief usage settings map to the CD-ROM game settings in this way:

[code:1:d111c89200]SOM ONLINE CD-ROM GAME
Aggressive Very Aggressive
Normal Aggressive
Conservative Normal
[/code:1:d111c89200]

We left out the CD-ROM game's "Conservative" and "Extra Conservative" options because they were FAR too conservative for the online game's context.

I hope this clears things up a bit.
