You are right. And it is a trick question. The commander was Franklin Buchanan, but he was injured on the first day of combat. He placed the ship under the command of his Executive Officer, Catesby Jones, for the 2nd day of combat. The name I mentioned, Tattnall, apparently was placed in command in April because he is listed as the commander when the "Virginia"/"Merrimack" was scuttled in May 1862. I had to look at several places to find that information.... :oops:

You are correct Randy-----Boy tell me this isn't feast or famine------8 of the raiders including Andrews were executed---Six of those who survived and were exchanged were the first to be awarded the newly created congressional medal of honor. Those executed are buried at the Chattanooga Natl. cemetery.

allegedly it was Bernard Bee to rally his troops which were starting to scatter. I recently heard another (less flattering) explanation for the term Stonewall - that in the very earliest months of the war, before First Manassas, Jackson was so slow to move around Harpers Ferry that someone coined the phrase Stonewall as a derogatory nickname
