Blyleven yanked too early

Postby sphilipp8 » Mon May 08, 2006 6:40 pm

Bernie,

The following are the particulars of a game when Blyleven was yanked after only facing one batter in the 5th. I have Bert set to slow hook. He had retired 8 in a row until he gave up a lead off single in the 5th.
He had only given up 2 runs - 1 in each of the first two innings.
Larry Andersen came in. I have no settings set for Andersen. Relief settings are set to Normal. Of course Andersen gives up a double to Dykstra, the first batter he faced.

I can't understand why Blyleven wasn't kept in. It was only the top of the 5th and I had slow hook set.

Game: Back to the 80s
Team Name: RI Cinderella Men

sphilipp8: I got to this one a bit too late, but from your description it sounds like a classic example of the "starter being pulled too early" issue that I've identified. I do have a solution in mind for it and will implement it when I'm comfortable with the amount of testing done. Thanks!

I fixed the link for you. It had said, "9_id" instead of "g_id".

This is an interesting one... it doesn't so much have to do with the computer manager as much as it has to do with our game interface. You've hit a rare case where you have no rotation set, and no per-game starters set, and you had to go deep into your bullpen for an extra-inning game. I'll see what I can do about it. Thanks.

*** BOTTOM OF INNING 10 ***
0 L.Parrish 4 Home Run b-H
SUBSTITUTE P - Jim Konstanty
0 F.Chance 6 Single b-1
SUBSTITUTE P - Steve Crawford
0 1 O.Smith 5 Single 1-3 b-1
0 1 3 R.Jackson 5 Fly Out b-0
1 1 3 W.Stargell 4 Walk 1-2 b-1
1 123 H.Wilson 4 Single 3-H 2-H 1-2 b-1

Tincup, who had not pitched the previous game, pitched the 7th and 8th and gave up a l;ead off HR to Parrish. Tincup is set for slow hook. Konstanty comes in and gives up a single to Chance. Konstanty, with an endurance factor of 4 and set on slow hook, is pulled after only one batter. So who does Hal bring in?

Steve Crawford. A 9R with Avoid LHB and Quick Hook checked. He gets the privalege of facing 3 LHB, 2 of them major HR threats with the game on the line. Never, ever, ever would I or anybody else in this game bring in Crawford in this circumstance.

Not laughing at you Semper, laughing with you.

SEMPER says;
I would have let Moose pitch until the 8th inning and used Hernandez to close out the game.

Didn't this string start with a complaint about Senor Smoke blowing Valenzuela's 5 hitter?

I realise the complaint wasn't entirely to do with pulling Valenzuela but juxtaposed against Eck pitching 4 perhaps shaky ones. It did strike me as funny though.

I have a couple of things I'd like to see implemented, but since this is a relief pitching forum I'll limit it to this. I'd like to see an individual setting possibility of Lefty Specialist or Righty Specialist which would mean coming in only to face one or two batters of his specialty that would be read more strictly than "avoid ?H batters" and "Max 1IP in releif".
