$100M (No DH) Franchise Theme League Auto-Draft

Our historical single season sets

I understand your concerns..."gaming the game"....How about this...

You must Auto Draft at least 10 Franchise Players. It does not matter if they are scrubs or high priced.

This will give you an opportunity to autodraft great players (I have no problem with that).

Then, you will have the Waiver Claim period to set your team up. Again, you must have a total of 10 Franchise Players on your team (it may be the same 10 from the autodraft or 10 different players).

Here's the catch...After the Waiver Claim...All Players are available to everyone. So if you leave a Stud Franchise Player off of your team after the Waiver Claim period, that stud is up for grabs. You are still responsible for keeping 10 franchise players on your team.

No one can autodraft a player from another franchise and if you end up with one of those players after the autodraft, you must immediately drop that player. However, you can pick up other franchise players after the waiver claims.

Here's an example of how this works...Let's say, I leave Boog Powell off of my Autodraft Team and I Autodraft W. McCovey. Let's say I get Willie McCovey in the Autodraft. Then I would have to make a decision during Waiver Claims to keep McCovey or Claim Boog back to play 1B. No one else can Claim Boog during waiver claims....However, right after waiver claims, if I leave Boog or Willie in the FA Pool, they are fair game....make sense?

This way, no one can keep untouchable studs in the FA pool and burn others during the autodraft by picking up upgraded studs. In short, you can not autodraft or Waiver Claim Players from other franchises...but after the waiver claim ends, all free agents are up for grabs.

Merm, I think that changes the spirit of the league. I liked the idea of keeping the identity of the teams. If all free agents are available to everyone that changes the game, and becomes more of a straight auto draft league. I think the challenge of this league was to take a core team and fill in the holes. With a $100K cap, I don't think you are restricted from going after some studs, while keeping a core team. If, however, your studs don't have to be on your AD list, that is unfair particularly to the lesser teams. If you have Baltimore you have an advantage already. Being able to go after McCovey for example, because you know you have Powell as plan B is unfair for the team without a stud at 1b.
I think we need to adopt FAaron's proposal that the players on your AD must be on your roster. I can see allowing you to drop them after the season starts, as the cap hit is a penalty.

Vince, I understand...But what I was trying to do is keep managers from wanting to go out and upgrade their studs with other studs, knowing that they could lose one or both of them.

In other words, you and I are in agreement. I do not want guys taking the risk of upgrading their studs if they could lose them. Also, I do not want guys upgrading and keeping a stud in the FA pool and never use them....That would be very wrong if I upgraded Boog to Willie and then no one else in the league could get Willie (cause he was on my team) or Boog (because I had the franchise rights to him)

So what that means is, because you stand the chance of losing a stud, you will be less likely to try to autodraft a player in a position where you have a good player....subsequently, because of the rule I am implementing (ALL Free Agents are up for grabs after the Waiver Period), I will not be autodrafting W. McCovey...I will stay with Boog and try to improve in other areas....because I could possibly lose Boog and not get McCovey....And I suspect then that everyone will be keeping there good Franchise Players and not trying to upgrade...Does that make sense?

You still have to keep your 10 players...for example...I am fairly certain I am going to keep...Boog, Frank, Cuellar, Blair, Buford, Hendricks, Etchebarren, D.Johnson, Watt and Richert...now I need to decide if I am going to keep Rettenmund, Brooks, Belanger, Palmer, Mcnally and others..upgrade some, or all of them...To further explain, I could for example dump Buford and try to autodraft C.Jones...but I could end up not getting Jones and loosing Buford after the Waiver claims....I think this adds an element of strategy

Most important, let's get four more managers and fill this league tonight!

If I understand your proposal correctly, you could still go after Mc Covey not get him, and still have the first chance to grab Boog (since no one else can claim him in waivers)? That still gives the advantage to the stronger teams, as they simply load up the waiver claims with the guys they want back. If I am mistaken, please let me know.

That is correct...but with my suggestion, after the waiver claims, I would have to release one of the two players (cause there is no DH and I do not need 2 1B's) and either one could be picked up by anyone.

In this case, it would be to my advantage to be able to choose from Willie or Boog...however, it would be to my disadvantage to upgrade in another position where I really need to do so because I spent my 1st autodraft pick on a position that I already have covered...so given this scenario, I would not try to autodraft Willie and I do not think that anyone else would if they had Boog...there really is no real advantage, because... 1)I lose 1 of my 10 O's I needed to make my quota if I stay with Willie, 2)it's not a huge upgrade, 3)I will lose one of them anyway, so why waste my 1st autodraft pick.

Let me give you another example as to why I am doing this...The Cubs have Bill Hands and Fergie Jenkins (great starters for any team)...If we do NOT institute my suggestion...That manager could autodraft Marichal and McDowell and possibly get them both...Then that manager could leave Hands and Jenkins in the FA Pool and no one could touch them...what a waste!

However, if I make ALL Free agents available after the waiver claims, that would...1)discourage that manager from trying to upgrade in the autodraft, where he already has good players...and...2)free up either (Marichal and McDowell) or (Hands and Jenkins) to teams that really need them...there will be no "hording" of good players in the FA Pool.

OK, I'm confused.

The main reason I joined was to do the franchise thing. I agree that we should try to retain the core identity of each team.
