Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

Postby Jablowmi » Thu May 11, 2006 12:20 pm

I've somewhat righted my ship, although it's a day-to-day thing. I think I may be 2 games over .500 for the first time all season, although I may finally have 3 1/2 starting pitchers (5 man staff). Win two, lose three, win two, lose two. All season. Tough division with Ballywackman, Rooks and Semper Gumby.

This veterans league sure has made me realize that my skills of analysis are in need of honing. I'm not particularly unhappy with my bracket 3 team, although I'm currently 32-40 and in last place in the east...without improvement relative to the competition, I'll be out this round. The season started out much better for my squad, but over time I think the competition has improved more than I have with add/drops. I've made my share, and many of those moves have worked out well, but overall others have made the better moves it appears. Stiff competition certainly is the rule around here!

[quote:59882c0542]One of the things I've always wondered about is:

On any given night, when a draft is conducted, are the mystery cards really random or are they all the same no matter what league they are drafted in due to a code imbedded that gives them their mystery card characteristic? In other words, if three leagues drafted in a night, would every George Brett selected be the 1980 card? And every Doc Gooden the 1984 card? I truly don't think so, and have never been able to really test this hypothesis, but just glancing at the MVP/Cy Young award leaders, most of the lists do have different candidates, with a bit of overlap, as you would expect. The real answer will come when I check all the players between these four leagues after the season, to make sure they don't all have the same card. One or two players all having the same years is within the realm of possibility, but every player throughout the four leagues having the same card would stink to high heaven.[/quote:59882c0542]

I'm starting to wonder about this...Strawberry is tearing it up in a couple of leagues, and Puckett is w/o power (with a high likelihood of his 5L card) in a couple of leagues.

Per injury, I know that I have Strawberry's '90 year in Bracket 1. Per injury, I also know that I have Gamble's '82 card and Gedman's '85 card. Anybody want to compare?

I have two pieces of evidence that would suggest that the mystery cards are random, or at least not the same in every bracket.

A) jeff russell is leading CY young race in bracket 1, but in bracket 2, he has been dropped twice, 39.2 iP 6.13 1.59

B) after 151 AB, Brett was dropped .603 OPS, 0 HR!?! it seems improbable that the same card is making him an MVP in Bracket 1, but a slug in bracket 2.

Ok, here is another hypothesis: could the mystery cards be assigned sequentially. That is, the first league to draft gets a certain year, then the league that drafts immediately after gets the next year's card.

I really doubt that is the case, but i suppose anything is possible with this game. I'd bet money that it is randomly assigned.

prize update

We're now up to just over 100 with payments trickling in. About half of the teams have contributed and we'll continue to collect through the next couple of rounds. Thanks to those who have sent something in.

Don't forget...bracket 1 did not draft the same night as brackets 2,3,4, so comparisons from bracket #1 won't work. It will be interesting to see at the end of the season how many similar years the players had in brackets 2,3,4. Could HAL use the same player years for all leagues drafting on any given night?

For any conspiracy theorists out there...

Once the season is over, it should be interesting to compare the years of players taken in all leagues. For example, if Brett's 3rd card is revealed in league 2, and Jack Clark's 4th card in league 2, would Jack Clark's 5th card be revealed in league 3 if Brett's 4th card is revealed in league 2? 8)

ROUND 2 - FIELD OF 36

Postby Jablowmi » Tue May 23, 2006 11:11 am

As we move toward the 3/4 mark of round 1, I thought I'd throw this out there re: round 2. As mentioned in the initial thread, all playoff teams will advance, as will the top 5 teams in each of the 4 brackets. The seeding will be as follows:

[b:381c14d723]Bracket 1 - Champ #1, Runnerup #2, Runnerup #3, Playoff #4, Playoff #5

Bracket 2 - Champ #2, Runnerup #1, Runnerup #4, Playoff #3, Playoff #6

Bracket 3 - Champ #3, Champ #4, Playoff #1, Playoff #2, Playoff #7, Playoff #8[/b:381c14d723]

The non-playoff teams (top 5 from each of the 4 brackets) will then be placed into the above brackets in a serpentine fashion, beginning with Bracket 2, then Bracket 1, Bracket 1, Bracket 2, Bracket 3, Bracket 3, etc.

The tiebreaker for [i:381c14d723]each category (e.g., champ, runner up, playoff, non-playoff) [/i:381c14d723]of the above will be as follows:

1. Best record
2. Head to head (obviously, this will not apply to the Champ or Runnerup breakdowns)
3. Run differential
4. Original seeding (I think it makes more sense to use this as a fallback rather than pick 3, as originally proposed - also will save time)

If I've missed something, please let me know, and good luck in the last 50+ games!
