If it was an auction the barker would have thrown out Reyes and said,
"All right, next up is a 22 year old Swith Hitter from the Domincan Republic (which of course means he might really be 26 fellers) but he's got LOTS of promise. He did walk 12 times in the month of April but only 9 times in May so who knows what he thinks about the strike zone. But he can field and he's got speed folks. After all, he's from the Dominican Republic as I said. What am I offered for this fine young SS prospect. Remember, this is a historically weak position folks, don't be left out on the youngest of the bunch."
"1 million to the man in the front row. What do you call yourself son? NINERSPHAN. This is basball son, baseball. OK, OK I understand. OK folks I have 1 million bid do I hear, 5 million. C'mon folks this is a prime SS prospect. He leads off for the 1969 and 86 World Champion Mets for Pete's sake. Do I hear 4 million? C'mon, his manager is Willie Randolph who was a walk machine. He'll teach this kid, he will. Do I hear 3 million? C'mon folks, sure the Mets might have scewed up his development by moving him to second in his first full season but that's because they REALLY thought that Kaz Matsui was the real deal. Really, I am not kidding, they did. Do I hear 2 miilion? Of course, this was the same brilliant organization that decided to trade uberprospect Scott Kazmir (and a LH no less) to that talent laden team the Devil Rays for the best journeyman scrub starter they could find Victor Zambrano. 1 million going once ... C'mon folks this is the team that thought that Willie Mays had something left in his tank??? ... 1 million going twice ... thought Fergosi was better than Nolan Ryan ... 1 million S-O-L-D to the young man who attended the wrong sports auction.
