how many starters do you really need?

if i have four starters who can go every 3 days, do i need a fifth starter?

You need to have 5 pitchers who can start. If you have 4* SP, then you can just use them and not your 5th. Most of the time if someone has 4 * SP, you'll normally see a cheap 5th SP that you dont use.

Normally, if I 4 *SP's, I use the fifth spot as a specialist, either a hard lefty or righty that might be used in either relief or to start against specific teams, especially those in my division. While some like to use it as a .50 tossaway player with no intent on ever pitching, I think it can be quite a weapon.
