Was I wrong? Maxxing a pitcher's use

Was I wrong? Maxxing a pitcher's use

I hyave a team for which my goal is to get as many wins as possible for Pete Alexander, so I listed him as set up and closer both ways, and left him out of the set rotation, and then insert him in the per game rotation. It was my understanding this would get HAL to by pass the required rest between starts, and let him score relief appearances, but he has appeared precisely zero times this year as a reliever. Where am I going wrong?

What kind of rotation are you using 4-5? If your using a 4 man rotation Hal is probably looking at him as a fatigue risk . What I did once with Babe Adams was pitch him in the rotation and then the next series make him relief everything . To make it work He has to pitch the 2nd game of a series . Pete may lose starts but he'll get more RP chances . At least it worked for me .

Just leaving him out of your preset rotation doesn't mean that Hal will use him as a reliever. If he starts, Hal will do his best to sit him the next three days.

I have been successful getting Camnitz three saves and about 40 starts. I kept him out of the rotation and pitched him every 4th day on the per game settings. HAL would occasionally put him in to relieve, but only in series where he was not going to pitch. As a result he probably only made about 5 relief appearances total for the season. I did not try to put him into the manager strategy as a closer or set up man though. Perhaps that is the secret. I still don't think HAL will use him if he is starting any game that series.

Try setting him as "mop up". That seems to tell HAL to use that pitcher in every inappropriate situation possible.

In a league just started last night, yes I'm already 0-3, a division rival of mine has Pete Alexander, and he pitched a CG win in Game 1 (117 pitches, 10 baserunners, 4 ER's)... then came into Game 3 in relief, first reliever off the bench... team trailing 5-2... he pitched the 8th, his team scored 4 runs in bottom of the inning, then HAL removed Pete to allow Ames (another strater) to get the save. Sadly, the opponent had to face $30.5M worth of pitching... Camnitz, Alexander and Ames in the same game!

See link for... Definite Pitcher's Team

Whatever setting "poe87" used, it worked for sure. All 10 pitchers are S/R's, with 4 big guns and 6 nickel guys... we'll see how long HAL tolerates the overuse, though, I suspect not for long.

Sure enough, HAL used Pete twice in relief last night, recording his first two saves of the season!

Happy to be of service in helping Pete get a few saves

Let me throw out this observation on why Pete may not get many wins as an RP.

He won't give up many leads, so no BS/W situations. He'd have to come in in a tie game, or with your team down to get a win.

THAT is an interesting point! I have him as set up and closer, situations in which he will be reserved for when the team has the lead! Perhaps if I do NOT designate him in those roles HAL will bring him in earlier and give hime more opportunities to win. My concern was that as someone whom HAL registers as needing rest, he may be the last used out of the pen.

I'm in the world series and I'd like to maximize Babe Adams. All season long he has been my top reliever (no starts). Can I get him a start and still get relief appearances? If so, will he be tired if brought in relief?
