Pre-waivers this is my line-up

http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/baseball/stratomatic/80s/team/team_other.html?user_id=75491

I pick second which means I'll get either Sandberg (my first choice) or Mattingly.
Any other thoughts?

Well you'd certainly want Sandberg over Mattingly - I'm amazed either is available! You might also try to shore up yourself defensively at 3B, 4e29, 4e29 and 4e22? Yuck.

Pitching looks pretty good, though you've got to hope for a good card from Caldwell. And I've seen Forsch blow up more times than not. Will Kison be in the pen? Farr and Reardon should do well for you.

Forsch will go. I lump him with the other Forsch, Wegman, Gullickson to some extent. Their cards look good, but I've never had any results from them.
Not sure how I'll use Kison. if Caldwell does alright, he'll be in the pen.
Interesting view on Farr. I've never used him before.

I think your biggest concern at the moment is defense. I'd get rid of both your 3B's and get a 3B and a LF who can field (DH PG).

If your happy with Caldwell, then I think your pitching looks fine (with replacing Forsch). Personally I'd cheapen your bullpen by getting rid of one of your two more expensive RP's and spend the money on a 4th starter. but that's just me. :)

Okay, if I have to pick one to shore up the D, LF or 3B, which would be the priority.
Because, in the event I get Mattingly and not Sandberg, I plan to DH Murray. That means PG plays LF or 3B.
Which should I consider?

If I were you, I'd try to trade Mattingly or Murray for a 3B (assuming there isn't a 3B who is #2 pick worthy). DH Johnson, leave Guerrero in LF. Horner gets cut or traded. No how, no way should you drop Johnson w/o first trying to trade him. But you should try to find a way to keep Johnson...speed, power at DH is a good thing.

If you get Sandberg, I'd still think about dropping Horner for a better-fielding 3B. Depends on who's available.

I'd pitch the 3B trade as Horner + Murray or Mattingly for a 3B + a stiff that you'll cut right away. (Basically a 2-for-1 swap, with you getting extra cash to go shopping for FA's.)

I think a 4 hurts you less at 3B rather than LF. PG's best position however is DH.

I've structured my waiver draft so that if I get Sandberg, Horner goes.
If I get Mattingly, I was going to drop HoJo.
My dilemma is that with the 2nd pic, I think I have an outside shot (okay, I know it's a real long shot) at both, since I'll be picking 2 and 14.
The alternative is to gamble that I'll get one or the other and I could guess wrong and end up with neither.
The cost is Horner and/or HoJo but I could move to grab HoJo back after waivers are over.
If I only get Sandberg, then I'm thinking I can go for the D at LF or 3B, depending on where the best value is defensively.

maybe I underrate D, but I see no problem with using HoJohnson or Pete at 3B. Their bats more than make up for their gloves. In a hitter's park, do you take HoJohnson or Oberkfell? If you say Oberkfell, you've never had HoJo's '89 card!

Here it is in the Astrodome........

I believe you have to get either Mattingly or Sandberg. Picking second, you can't miss on one, assuming you have the cash available.

Personally, I'd set the waivers to 1. Pick up Sandberg, drop Horner; 2. Pick up Mattingly, drop Horner. I believe that the only risk you run is that you wouldn't get Mattingly in the second round if nobody else puts him on their waiver list. (As I understand the waiver process, if #1 pick isn't Sandberg, you'd get Sandberg and drop Horner, then #2 pick would be invalid due to insufficient funds, probably. If #1 picks Sandberg, you'd get Mattingly, drop Horner.)

I don't believe that's a great risk---first Mattingly is good, somebody could upgrade at 1B. (You could look at the other teams and see if anyone obviously needs a 1B.) And second, somebody in the league probably has read this thread and realizes that if he wants Mattingly, he has to pick him in the 1st round. Likewise, everyone in the league knows to be online at 4 if they want Johnson...hopefully, you have a quick trigger finger.

I'd still look for D at 3B, but I wouldn't hestitate to play Johnson there if I fail in that quest. Preference 1: Try to upgrade another position using Mattingly or Murray as bait. Preference 2: Use Muarry as a DH. At least you'd insulate yourself if you're unlucky and draw Mattingly's bad card.
