Has anybody else been very disappointed with Eric Show and Dwight Evans?

Never had Evans, but I had a decent performance out of Show in my last league, having picked him up midseason...

He actually started out being much more effective than those final stats indicate, but I guess down the stretch the substance abuse caught up with him...

Evans can be great. Several very good years. He usually prospers when you have a higher number of LHSP in your division. Show is usually not high on many people's selections. There are just better/cheaper alternantives.

Show had a great whip/rhb against average/and so ratio but was 0-4 for me in 5 starts and never lasted long in the games he pitched. He just never seemed to give the team a chance to win. I dumped him and picked up Sid Fernandez. Sid first start is today so we will see how he does.

Evans was horrible. He was batting .148 with well over 100 plate appearance and was a rally killer for me. He did manage five meaningless homeruns during that stint. I dumped him and picked up Joe Carter and Dust Baker both of whom are performing well for me.

Dwight Evans has 3 great cards, one ok card and the real dog of a card. While he has a better average against lefties, at least one of his cards offers more power against rights.

Overall, I am about 50/50 on getting a solid Dewey card. I think that he is slightly overpriced (not to the extent of Dusty Baker), but his defense and .obp numbers are 2nd - 5th round material.

I picked up Show in an act of desperation once. His card was like a New York cabbie's horn, it blows. What about Steib (best value for the $$, bar none, Viola, Sanderson or Ken Forsch) :idea: ?

All the pitchers you mentioned are gone. I am prety pleased with my staff right now - even though they are all lefties.

Vida Blue is the only one I am concerned about he has only pitched in 3 games thus far.

I did pick up Baker when I got rid of Evans. I hope he does something at least better than Evans.

A couple other possibilities for Blue: D. Martinez, Wegman, Leibrandt, Lamp (seems to be good cards lately) or even Bob Forsch. All 3 days rest guys. If stuck with a few 4 day rest guys, could try Knepper, Haas, Schmidt, Lea, even John Farrell.

I think there is 1 great Baker card, the rest are just OK (with 2 less than OK). When I am into 2nd tier guys, I have found Tom Pacioreck (can be just as good as Baker) to be a solid LF, with a solid .obp, BA and decent .slg. What about Ogilivie, Roenicke or Brunansky? Any of these 3 may give you as much as Baker, for a lot less $$$.

I've several times had very good luck with Eric Show. I've never drafted him or started a season with him, but once I tried him as a replacement and had good luck with him and have gone to him as a replacement several times since, and generally with success.

I think he's a replacement option worth considering in HR parks because although his WHIPs are comparatively high, he has few BPHR on his cards. Also, he has only one really bad year. In a replacement, I'm usually looking for a guy with a lot of pretty good years rather than looking for trying to get lucky with somebody knock-out years. And he's usually around--most people think he's overpriced and not very good. I think there's definitely a luck fact in any player performance, and if you've had good luck with somebody in the past, you're more likely to use them again. Obviously, the reverse is also true.

Who knows, maybe I'll even start a season with him some time?

BTW, with me, Dwight Evans is either awesome or not great. More often the latter, than the former, but that may just be the (bad) luck of the draw.

And yes, Stieb is great, but you've got to draft him very high to get him. Or wait for some dumb cluck to drop him after a few bad starts. Show is always around and to me that's part of his value.

I never have, nor likely never will use Show.

Dwight is one of my favorites, but you have to be content with his doing better vs. lefties... if you don't have other righty-killers, I'd avise you to pick up one of the cheaper ones (4M range)... Gibson, Daniels, Greenwell, Oliver, etc... if you can tolerate their defenses. You'll likely face twice as many righty SP's vs. lefty ones.

If you have "vs. R's" all set, then guys like Evans, Valentine, Rice, etc. are awesome to have around.
