actually a real tight draft. Maybe the weakest free agent class I have ever seen. Mcguire, Carter, Fisk, Daniels, Dykstra and thats about it. Gooden and Carlton in SP but those guys are generally considered overpriced. Gibson, Reggie, Tartabull and Mitchell and other guys usually available all drafted! Lots of HR parks.

I got aggressive with my picks- Murphy at 1-and got most of my top 10. Didnt get most of my bottom 20 so I have 4th waivers. Thankfully this was not weighted waivers.

From what I can tell, 3 of us were drafting for Remy as our starting 2B. I put him 12th and didnt get him! I used to get him 15/16. I might not be the only person who thinks he is a top 5 2B.

The Calm Before The Storm

Postby hechojazz » Mon Jun 19, 2006 12:34 pm

The transactions wire has been pretty quiet so far today...looks like everyone's pretty set for the beginning of play tonight. It is interesting to see some of the strategies employed in the pitching department or in the hitting/fielding departments from team to team. Who knows what the configuration of the league will look like by midseason, but right now there sure are some impressive teams here! Let's play ball!

It's been kind of a strange pre-season. Two teams didn't particpate in waivers and one of them, Adams County Admirals has yet to make a transaction??? Still trying to figure out what the Pigheads are doing hording middle infielders. Sandberg, Randolph, Larkin, Ozzie and Concepcion are still on their roster.

Not sure what to expect from my team - the Cinderella Men. Missing out on Clark during the auto-draft killed me - I'm really going to miss his OBP. I also really wanted Stieb - had him #3 on my card but ended up with Gubicza. Should be fun though.

Larkin Smells Like Bait

Postby hechojazz » Mon Jun 19, 2006 8:26 pm

I was in Bracket 3 last time around too, and Driftwood Pigheads also came through the draft thick with shortstops...seems like a good idea to have valuable trade bait you can use to help fill primary needs with very good players. SS is so thin you know you'll have multiple suitors to pick from.

Anyway, I needed a SS in a major way - wound up with Dickie Thon! So he got Singleton's '80 card from me for Larkin. Today he got Strawberry for Larkin. Good strategy!

The East

Postby YountFan » Mon Jun 19, 2006 9:10 pm

EAST

[b:edab562db3]UglyJerry and his Arlington based Barely Surviving[/b:edab562db3] team look to be be the slammers of the division. With Parrich (C), Joyner (1B), Grich (2b), Rikpen (SS), Johnson (3B), Guerrero (LF), Lemon (CF), Cruz (RF) and Tartabull (DH) there is not a power shortage anywhere in the lineup. In fact all of the starting 9 could find themselves with 25 or more homers by seaosn end.

Of cource all this power comes with a price and that price is a big gamble on pitching.

T[b:edab562db3]ooBig is planing his Kings County Warriors in the Astrodome [/b:edab562db3]with strong pitching (Boston #21, Black, Browning and Liebrandt, W Hernandez) and plenty of OBA guys (K Hernandez, Rose, Kruk and Randloph), defense (Hernandez, Randloph, Cincinnati #11, W Wilson) and steady power up and down the lineup. The pitching will keep them in the game, but can they win in Arlington?

[b:edab562db3]Hechojazz's Freddie Freeloaders look like they'll be keeping the Dodger Stadium[/b:edab562db3] crowd happy with solid starters (El Sid, Ojeda, Dravecky) and Relief (Righetti and Reardon) and taking a page from Sparky Anderson book playing it very strong up the middle with Trammell. Whitaker and Puckett. Fill the line up out with Hrbek, Downing, Gibson and Barfield and there doesn't appear to be a weakness in this team.

Rounding out the east is my own [b:edab562db3]Olympic Stadium based Sinister Footwear II[/b:edab562db3]. Going with a pitching and defense team the Footwear sport a rotation of Higuera, Valenzula, Martinez and Stieb with Sutter and Lavelle in the pen. The hitting took on the twist of fielding a line up with 7 switch hitters, Simmons, Murray, Doran, Fernandez, Raines, Pettis and Bonilla. "We'll see how it goes." said YountFan.

Conclusions
1. Lots of lefty starters
2. Anyone can win the division

GAME ONE NO HITTER
I'm pretty happy to have picked up El Sid!! Opening Day no hitter against YountFan and his switchhitters! (swept him in fact - let's see how long that lasts!)

Well, if you have to go 0-3 you might as well get no hit too. Great start jazzman.

Satrted out 3-0 with Brett, Winfield and Bell all hitting .500+, which is a good sign and gave me the confidence to dump Franco and Dewey Evans. I couldn't resist the early Burleson dump by someone and grabbed him, exchanging Dwight Evans for Cruz and Franco for Burleson, giving me an all "1" IF. Evans was picked up by the Cinderella Men in my division, which could come back to haunt me. Evans was only 1-12 vs three righties, so I'm hoping it's one of his off years. I think I was prejudiced against him because I used him in Rd 1 and he was mediocre. I could also regret losing Franco as leadoff. I'm hoping a solid "D" in the Dome can keep me in the top portion of the league.
