Well, we got 24 games into the test round before Bernie had to put the project on hold. I am the least experienced manager in the group that included Bernie.
It was instructive in that Bernie was able to track how HAL made decisions in a methodical way. He tried some fixes on the early pulling of starters. Bernie can speak for himself but I think he/we learned that there were some problems with set-up man decision-making. We analyzed in excruciating detail box-scores and bullpen choices. I also think it was fair to say that most of the HAL decisions were pretty good. As many of you know I am a critic of HAL and so this opportunity was a good opportunity to do the examination scientifically.
Bernie tried to isolate questionable calls to see why HAL chose one pitcher over another, when was a subsitution made, what settings was the owner using at the tme, etc. For me, the real value will be in seeing if we can come to conclusions on what the manager strategy choices do and what they do not do. What is the first cut, the manager choice, the player settings or HALs logic. I especially wanted to see how HAL managed switch-hitters in critical situations. I suggested when we are finished we put out a guide to bullpen settinsg or something like that. That is all a long way off.
I also had a no-hitter in a damn test game. Can I save that for league play?
I think however it is fair to say we have not nearly finished the testing. I ams ure Bernie will call us back when his schedule clears (if it does).
