2 outs in the bottom of the 7th and trailing by 4. Bases are loaded and HAL brings in Juan Rincon to pitch...and at the same time replaces Adam Everett at SS with MARK DEROSA!

Can't figure out the logic to this one :? :? :?

Could it be that Hal pulled off a double switch?

Looks like maybe Rincon went in the #8 spot for Everett (who made the last out in the 7th) and that DeRossa was put in the #9 spot and led off the 8th.

I didn't think HAL was that sophisticated, but then I seldom play non-DH leagues where this type of manuevering would occur.

Coffee is right. It was a double switch.

Not sure it's a double switch I'd make - 3 rested relievers in the bullpen, Rich Harden starting the next game, pulling the best defensive SS in the league for a 4 range, just have him lead off against a RHP while you have Lenny Harris available...guess being an American league fan blinds me to these subtle nuances of the game

I wasn't trying to imply it was the right move. I'm sure if Lenny Harris had a SS rating HAL would have stuck him in there instead of Derosa.

Actually, I use Harris quite often and it's amazing the positions he can play!

I like the move. You trail 6-1, so you need offense. DeRosa has more on-base than Everett (important for the beginning of the 8th inning) as well as more power (important for the 9th inning). Of course, Harris has more on-base, but he's good for only one at-bat, and you can easily figure out that, if you ever get close to a comeback, you will need an extra pinch-hitter for your reliever in the 9th. So you need Harris for the 9th.

Furthermore, I disagree with the idea of spending two relievers, like you suggest. You're losing 6-1, so it's no time to use many pitchers and potentially jeopardize your future game. You need to keep fresh as many relievers as possible. The right move is either to stick with the current pitcher who is in trouble, or to change for a new reliever, make the double switch, and stick with new reliever until the end of the 8th.

Also, given that Hal chose Rincon, a double-switch move is absolutely needed. You need to have your best reliever as long as possible.

Of course, you take a risk by changing a ss-1 for a ss-4, but at 6-1, you better take some chances. There is no difference in losing 6-1 or 8-1.

double switch

Postby rgimbel » Sat Jun 24, 2006 10:28 am

i had the opposite thing happen to me Seo was leading 3-1 and leading off the 7th hal ph boone for him (which is fine I have no problem with that) Boone is my def replacement at 3rd. boone started a 3 run ralley which ended when A Ramirez made last out. Hal then brought in Carrasco (right move) but had to ph for him next inning. why not ds there boone is my def replacement anyway.
