We are in the same league!!! Lucky, lucky you! Here is my player by player critique coming from an idiot man, I mean intelligent man who has played in now 79 2001 leagues...
Pitchers
Mussina, M. R S7* 17 11 0 228.2 202 80 42 214 3.15 1.07 E 9.19M
stud...enough said
Pettitte, A. L S7* 15 10 0 200.2 224 89 41 164 3.99 1.32 2L 5.25M
good choice for Veterans Stadium
Williams, W. R S6* 15 9 0 220.0 224 99 56 154 4.05 1.27 3L 5.20M
cannon fodder in any stadium...those BP HRs will haunt you
Nomo, H. R S6* 13 10 0 198.0 171 99 96 220 4.50 1.35 3L 4.13M
ditto
Biddle, R. R S5/R3 7 8 0 128.2 137 77 52 85 5.39 1.47 2L .50M
who is this guy? a cult hero in 2002 but a batting practice pitcher in 2001...keep in mind that you have fewer player controls in 2001...HAL will LOVE this guy as a relief pitcher. Draft a SP only for a nickel (.50M) and let the pitcher collect dust since you have a 4 *SP rotation.
Guardado, E. L R1/C4 7 1 12 66.2 47 26 23 67 3.51 1.05 5L 5.93M
overpriced period...
Garces, R. R R2/C0 6 1 1 67.0 55 29 25 51 3.90 1.19 6L 2.61M
??? he sucks!
Roberts, G. R R3 1 0 0 26.0 24 11 8 29 3.81 1.23 6R 1.95M
nice pick...good middle reliever and he doesn't give up boom-boom. Would peg him as setup man against RH hitters.
Zerbe, C. L R3 3 0 0 39.0 41 17 10 22 3.92 1.31 4R .63M
One of the best bargain pitchers in 2001. Would not name him as a setup for either LH or RH. Let HAL place him.
Stechschulte, G. R R2/C3 1 5 6 70.0 71 30 30 51 3.86 1.44 3L .50M
Probably an underrated pick. He is in the right stadium to perform decently.
Mathews, T. R R2/C0 1 0 0 14.2 11 5 1 10 3.07 1.35 1L .50M
Underated pick. Has a little too much boom-boom for comfort. However, not much else is available.
FINAL ANALYSIS: No closer = Some trouble...you have good setup relievers but no one in the pen to secure victory 9 times out of 10. Expect some or more blown leads in the late innings. Get rid og Garces and draft Buddie if available.
Hitters
Kendall, J. R C 3(+1)e1 606 84 22 10 53 44 13 .266 .358 .335 2L 1.95M
an underperformer in 2001. good OB but no pop and no defense. at leat on the DL he can only be out for 3 games max.
Fasano, S. R C 3(-1)e12 63 10 5 3 9 4 0 .254 .476 .329 3L .69M
He got pop. Underrated because his throwing error rating sucks. Best pop of under dime ($1.0M) catchers.
Thome, J. L 1B 4e11 526 101 26 49 124 111 0 .291 .624 .416 7R 6.96M
Good fit for Veterans!!! Need a platoon though...can't hit LH worth a lick. Believe it or not but Geoff Blum would be a good platoon mate for under a dime.
Delgado, C. L 1B 5e9 574 102 31 39 102 111 3 .279 .540 .408 3R 4.87M
can't get hurt but usually underperformed in 2001...over 79 teams I think I had him twice and he sucks. Tino Martinez would be a better fit if available with Thome as DH.
Karros, E. R 1B 4e6 438 42 22 15 63 41 3 .235 .388 .303 3L .68M
Not bad as a platoon with Thome but prefer Bum instead.
Vidro, J. S 2B 3e12 486 82 34 15 59 31 4 .319 .486 .371 1L 4.02M
Needs an enrollement in an HMO for hospital visits...in 2001 went on the DL too many times...otherwise solid when well.
Cirillo, J. R 3B 2e8 528 72 26 17 83 43 12 .313 .473 .364 4R 4.35M
Always had a bat that sould hit LH platoon with him...an underperformer unless patooned.
Cabrera, O. R SS 1e12 626 64 41 14 96 43 19 .276 .428 .324 1R 3.66M
One of my favorites! Nobody loved him when I first posted about him 3+ years ago about being the best SS bargain. Hits for average, some pop, some speed, but not a high OBP. Can't get injured adds to the bargain. A good pick in any stadium.
Vizcaino, J. S SS 3e44 256 38 8 1 14 15 3 .277 .344 .322 2R .58M
bench material that sucks...I usually spent a few more bucks to draft the likes of a Macias of Jolbert Cabrera. You need a better backup at 2B because Vidro won't give you more than 140 games (if that) at 2B.
Robinson, K. L LF 3(+2)e8 186 34 6 1 15 12 11 .285 .344 .330 4R .82M
A little one-sided but a nice fit for the Vet.
Edmonds, J. L CF 1(-1)e7 500 95 38 30 110 93 5 .304 .564 .410 5R 7.07M
A good fit but does underperform. Too vulnerable to LH pitchers. I usually platooned a guy like this in 2001 if they sucked against LH pitchers with Jose Hernandez at $1.68M...a little pricey platoon but it does work for a 60 HR+ platoon.
Cruz, J. S CF 3(0)e3 577 92 38 34 88 45 32 .274 .530 .326 1L 4.15M
great pick...you beat me out of him you #$%^&*$%^&*(&^&*!!! Good hitter to anchor the 6 or 7 hole with some nice production.
Burnitz, J. L RF 2(-3)e6 562 104 32 34 100 80 0 .251 .504 .347 2R 3.72M
He'll produce in the Vet. Just don't expect him to hit his body weight in pitcher's stadiums. Given what's left, not a bad hitter to have at all in RF.
GET RID OF DELGADO FOR TINO AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!! Sorry for shouting that at you...Palmeiro (pre-steriod discovery) or Tino will outproduce this guy. Tino will give you cash to use somewhere else. Nice offense...but you need a platoon in CF. Edmonds just underperforms and can't play both ways against LH and RH in 2001.
