When did you start playing Strat?

Postby Detroit-Tigers » Thu Jun 29, 2006 1:21 pm

I started in 2003 when I heard a sports announcer on 550 AM (buffalo) talking about Strat-o-matic. I looked it up, and started playing here.

FrankM's POST

"1975. Bought the game and it had the Reds and Red Sox. Purchased my first full set of cards in 1977. Saw that Strat was online when if just came out but didn't join until a year later."

I was introduced to Strat by Frank M(I knew his younger brother-my age)-I was 12 so it must have been right around 1977-I found out at an early age "Strat and Beer" were a fun combo!!! I'd kill my daughter if I ever caught her rolling dice and sippin' spiked capri-suns. It rained the other day and she played her first strat game at 10. She beat me 1 nothing.

Maybe I'm the oldest Strat player here - I started in the summer of 1966 as an 11 year old, playing with cards from the 65 season. Within two weeks of the game arriving, every kid in the immediate area was spending hours and hours a day on my grandmother's back porch in rural West Virginia as we played this incredible game. Major family crisis when I got my ten year-old cousin to trade me Harmon Killebrew for Tony Kubek - once the other kids explained to him what had been done (I had convinced him that a guy with a name like Harmon couldn't be any good) he hit me from behind with a rocking chair, leading to further and further escalation, extending to parents, aunts, etc. Grandma stopped the violence with an ultimatum - any more arguing and fighting, no more Strat-O-Matic. Maybe this is the key to world peace.....

My table top career starts with a game called LONGBALL back in 1975. It was a cool set based on 8-sided dice and finally gave my beloved Cardinals a chance to beat the Pirates for the division title. (My first heatbreak even before I discovered girls). After playing LONGBALL for five years, through the glory days of the Big Red Machine and the Bronx Zoo, I packed away my dice throughout the remainder of high school and college.

Strat finally came calling in the late 80's when I started playing in a North Carolina face-to-face league. After a few second division finishes it would take the internet to coax me out of retirement for continued pain and frustration at $25 a pop.

In 1959 and 1960 I was playing APBA a competitive card/dice game but my best little league buddy introduced me to Strat-o-matic and have been playing it off and on ever since. In college we had leagues in both baseball and football. I thought the football game was as good as the baseball game and am surprised it didn't translate well in this format. I love this game even tho we don't have complete control over in game moves. I think it would be fun to have a no money league and whole team games and it would be interesting to know the dice rolls sometimes.
