Boggs or Schmidt or Relief or Other?

I have never been a big fan of Mike Schmidt becuase of his cost and lack of balance, but his D is much better than Boggs - and would be a good compliment to Oz and Morgan in the infield. Anyway, I'd appreciate any tips for what to do with my $3.5 million for this bomber team playing in Sportsman's '34.

I'm guessing this is a DH league? In that case, you have one OF too many. Oakland #24 would be a very nice addition, though. And I think Schmidt works better than Boggs. Haller's OK, but I prefer Dickey as a better value on offense with better D.

You also have one SP too many. I would cut Miller, Heintzelman, or, maybe, Merritt for another reliever or 2. Given what's available, I'd say Klippstein or Baumgartner. Hughes, Russell or Morgan would be nice compliments as well.

Funny you mentioned Oakland #24, because he is the number one free agent. If I release Russo - and just give up on the idea of pitching - I could trade Valentin up for Ricky, and add Schiraldi and New York #47 to the bullpen, while also trading Boggs for Schmidt.

That leaves $1.29 for another starter or reliever, which could come from among your suggestions. I guess that begs the question of whether folks think it is more important to have a solid starter or a solid relief corps. (the division is equally split between deathly pitchers parks (Dunn '20 and Royals '80) and to hitters parks (Sportsmans '34 and Fenway '67). There is really no offense left in the FA pool.

As to the carrying of an extra outfielder, my concern with this crew has been injuries, and having a decent back up, plus Covington/Ellis gives me a premium DH platoon. The extra pitcher is to be able to use a lefty or righty in the five spot to take advatnage of specific situations.

Valentine OR Covington could be your DH, not both. That's total overkill.

As far as injuries go, ignore them! Yes, there will be injuries, but they are not necessarily a given. I've seen Honus Wagner play 160 games. I've seen Tris Speaker go down 9 separate times in a season. Having a $5-6M backup is only feasible in a $200M league.

You're going to play a majority of games in a hitter's park. Hitter's park = more starter fatigue = more bullpen usage = you need a strong pen. I WANT to get to my pen in a hitter's park as they are often better than my starters. Get through 5 or 6 solid innings and leave the rest to better arms in the pen.

fwiw, here's what I would do:

Dump Russo, Gomez, Leever, Merritt, Heintzelman, Miller, and Dayley
Pick up Derringer, Root, Malone, Holtzman, Russell, Baumgartner, McDowell, and a .50 SP/RP

Dump Haller, Boggs, McCosky, and Furillo
Pick up Dickey, Schmidt, and Henderson

With .66 left, you can play around a little with your backups. The obvious place would be in your backup catcher--Kluttz, Z. Taylor, or Burns, perhaps.

And I wouldn't worry about York's D. There are no free agents availabe that you'd want over him anyway.

You can have all due credit. :D Hey, I didn't have to take the suggestions, so I can accept the vagarities of the game.

Hey, what do you think about Ozzie, Morgan, Ricky, and Covington against righties? I originally had the Wiz in the 9 spot, but this is a pretty right-handed heavy power line-up, and those three leading off should get on plenty. It may be a bit unorthodox, but I think it might work.

As for York, I can swallow a poor glove at first. Fact is, agabriel is right, there is no better, and at least he is a two. His bat should more than cover any errors. He has always been good for 110-130 RBIs for me, and I've used him a lot.
