Baker again?

After promising myself I would never do it again, I've again gone to a power park and spent no $ on SPs. I like my pen and think I'm pretty balanced on offense, although I've flip-flopped Ruth/Money and Foxx/McCovey at least one time. I like Foxx b/c I think I can bat him 2nd behind Morgan, although it's the Babe!

Let me know what you think.......thanks in advance.

I see the 80's guy returns!!!

I'm somewhat of a sophomore with the ATG game... but I have sought and received advice on some slugger teams, so if you take it just as second-hand advice... I'll pass onto you some comments that I can see the vets/experts commenting on your team... and they can (and hopefully will) jump in with more specifics.

Starters... you have mostly the usual correct cheapy SP's... but in my opinion, Carlson will get creamed. I don't see much else cheap out there, maybe someone else can recommend someone better.

Relievers... seems like you're a reliever short... with the SP's getting pulled early and often, you'll need a deeper pen (4 RP's)... with no 0.50M scrub in there (Garman) either. I see Tincup and Humnphreys are available, I think they'd STRONGLY recommend getting either or both of them to bolster your pen.

Hitters... those I like a lot. I've been warned against using a 2 in CF in the ATG-2 game (i.e. Ott), I think they'd recommend Gorman Thomas, who is available, that's free up some dollars as well... it wouldn't let you upgrade Money all the way to Clark/Foxx... but could let you spend more in RP's or even an SP or two. Again, the experts can tell you many more offense options than this, but it's a likely safe-bet that sdomething like Gorman would be better than Ott in CF.

Catcher... May is the man... but with the injuries and late-game closeness expected, I'd think you'd want a good minus-arm catcher within backup.

OK, vets and experts... tell me how I messed up your advice!

Meanwhile, good luck.

wj , there is no such thing as messed up advice . Some will say the pitching is good enough because of the runs that the O will score . I , myself don't attest to this theory at Baker . I feel you have to have some starting pitching at least . Hitters are going to hit and sometimes they can carry a poor staff but I would reckon that its 1 in 5 that do well but all will lead the league in hitting .

fr, points well taken.

I guess I was already assuming by jablowmi's opening post that he was pre-destined to try the cheap-SP route... I do agree that there's likely higher success in W-L with other more subtle combinations... that I hopefully will try to discover for myself in the future... likely ATG-3!

Thanks for the comments.

I've made a number of changes since the first post, including adding, then subtracting SPs. The Jablowmis are going to try to outscore some people, hopefully, in 82 games or so.

vs. RHP

Morgan
Selkirk
Foxx
Ott
Aaron
Banks
May
Bando

vs. LHP

Morgan
Foxx
Banks
Aaron
Ott
Bando
Selkirk
May

Or something like that. I swapped McCovey for Selkirk, thinking that the latter would be better in some of the league's pitcher parks, but could switch back.

My starters are weak, although I do have a couple of the power park favorites in Speer, Ruether and Bagby, whatever that means.

The pen is strong with Lefferts and Tincup and closer Johnny Murphy. Do I need another (Staley, Eastwick-type)? I'd have to dump Selkirk for McC to get one.

and I understand the whole 1 in CF thing (Gorman over Ott), but doesn't Ott's +100 advantage at OBP more than make up for that?

Well...kind of. But Thomas has that extra BP HR against both side, and saves money. Comparing the cards directly isn't always the best way to make a decision. IMO, Thomas is a value player in a small park. He will provide more for his price than other players, while Ott is probably going to provide value very close to his price. Also, with poor pitching, it is more important to have good defenders, so that thee are SOME outs on the pitchers card  So..if you think you can find a good use for the $$ difference between Thomas and Ott, I would go for Thomas. If not, keeping Ott should be fine.

You have Ott too far down in the lineup. Why waste his OBP down there? I would have Morgan/Ott go 1/2. Most of their OBP comes from walks, so you do not want Ott walking from the 4 whole. From there, you really cannot go wrong.

Thanks for the input and great point re: the value of Thomas. I actually dumped Selkirk for Thomas (moving Ott over to LF) and was able to swap Eddie M for Bando. Although, I suppose I just lost the value of Bando by getting Eddie. Confusing. Should be fun, though, and thanks again.
