Seeking advice on a Petco team

Postby unesid » Thu Jul 13, 2006 11:40 am

Other stadiums in-division are: Yankee, BOB and PNC.

The big question I have is: can I get away with Clark in CF; my defense is pretty strong elsewhere. I'm planning on using the DH platoon of Garabito/Young.

Why use Clark in CF when you have Tavares?

Clark makes a fine DH while Tavares gives you good D, great arm and he hits RH's very well.

Francoeur, Jeff is a waste here, imho. also your pen is a little weak and your starting pitching is too slanted vs LHH. I'd go a little cheaper in the SP, spend some more on the pen and go as good as D as you can get, it will improve your cheap SP.

Here is a team of mine in Petco, it's had its ups and its downs but its been a very solid team at home.

Nice choice in closers Scott. Uggie looks like he's a perfect fit for Petco.

I wanna give Wickman a shot next time I try Petco.

I try to go for the dominant closers in Petco. I made the finals with Gordon and Nathan one time.

Clark would be a good DH, that's true.

I like the Garabito/Young platoon, but Clark, for a cheaper price, will do a job as good as the platoon. Garabito's card vs rhp is only slightly better than Clark, and his card vs lhp sucks. Given that Young as a high injury (at 8), Garabito will likely see some actions vs lefty pitching. Garabito can also make 15 games. So the overall combo is cheaper and perhaps better with Clark alone (a 600+ PA).

I definitively agree that I would not use Clark as a cf, though. A fine DH for PEtco, but not a cf (in my opinion).

I disagree with Francoeur being a waste. 50% of the divisional pitching has left-handed pitching.

Your biggest problem is a bench too crowded (probably because you wanted to keep your hand on many players). In my opinion, Snow, Garabito and perhaps Young (for a cheaper bench player) should go away. One SP should be disregarded as well. With the extramoney, I would better the offensive talent in the outfield.

For this reason, I am not sure I would keep Taveras. There are so many Petco options for cf, there must be a better offensive cf out there.

I think that Figgins is overpriced (and overestimated), except for injury-prone teams, which your team is not. His best position is at 3rd base, but you already have Wright.

To keep Petco advice together, I'm going to partially hijack this thread for a bit of advice ... I have a team that's first in its division, but is only average at best (currently 37-37).

http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/baseball/stratomatic/2006/team/team_other.html?user_id=5806

I didn't seem to capture enough ballpark advantage: I am 17-22 at home. My ERA is about 1.00 better at home, but batting all around is significantly worse at home. No news there as this is Petco ... so what gives; what am I missing? Are there any moves I can make to shore up my output at home? (Other parks in my division are Jacobs, Coors, and Wrigley.)

My current thoughts are:

1. Patterson stinks for me at home and away. I can downgrade to someone suited to the park like Vazquez or and net upgrade my hitting. Or I could mortgage hitting and pick up Pedro who is available (the league went for hitting ... basically all the non* studs are available + Pedro and Santana who were dropped).

2. 3B: I picked up Mora late to add some slugging against righties. I'm platooning him at home and not maximizing his value. I might be able to flip him to get F. Lopez and his iron glove and slightly better hitting. I don't see anyone that can hit particularly better than Mora out there (Youkilis is available and suited to the park, but I need RBIs more than BBs, I think).

3. I'm not hitting righties well enough. I could try to find a catching platoon in place of an anaemic (vs. R) Redmond. Randy Winn is available, but I'm not sure how I can afford him.

4. CF: I could dump the Tavares/Logan platoon and pick up C. Duffy and his 3 inj. or there are two 1s available in Rowand (can't hit righties) and Hunter (inj., L slanted) to improve my defense. (FYI: As far as I can tell, I haven't been losing games due to the limp arms in the outfield).

Any thoughts?

1. Patterson is really stinking up the joint for you. Guys that are available for you to go for are: Colon, Contreras and my pitching park favorite Blanton.

2. I'd keep Mora and continue platooning him with I assume Gomez.

3. Redmond is a good catcher, but a bit over-priced IMHO. I like Navarro in a pitcher's park. Decent B, N power BOTH ways, Good OB but bad clutch.

4. Tavares is under-perfoming for you, as you can tell. Tough one here. Duffy would be nice, but you are gonna need an evenly balance backup when he goes down.

FWIW- I think this team needs another big bat, someone with some HR power.

Thanks socal ... I agree on the HR Power -- or any power in general. Who is the tough question. I'm loathe to dump N. Johnson, but Sexson is available. He seems as close to natural power available. Anyone you recommend targeting?

He's not a bad choice but he does hit LH's better than RH's and you are already mashing them pretty well.
