[quote:a95f84788c="bjs73"]I'm sure that this will come up at some point and I don't think that it has been considered?
Say team #1 is in the playoff hunt in 1983 and he wants help for the pennant drive. Can he trade a player that doesn't appear on his team until 1985 to team #2 for some core help now?
If yes, then it would be like trading your farm system, I suppose, if it was your primary team.... But what if it is your "swappable" secondary team? There could be issues with that also?
I don't know how much of this is up for discussion or not but I sort of prefer a "non-droppable" secondary team to a certain extent. It makes trading transactions clear cut and gives you options to trade your farm hands (players that don't appear until the mid-decade) without causing an issue down the road where the a secondary team's talent was traded away and then, in turn dropped the following year.
It makes people sleep in the bed they made, I think?[/quote:a95f84788c]
Fortunately you're not too far ahead of me as I was already thinking about this. I was going to suggest that YES we would allow 'future considerations' type deals where a team deals future rights to a player. A couple of thoughts about this, though:
- you can only trade the rights if you have exclusive rights; if the player is shared for their first or any other year, you would only be trading the rights to compete for this player
- these deals have to be done in good faith, under the assumption that you will be continuing to own your team. That is to say, if you're thinking you're going to bow out of the league in a season or two, please do not trade away all your future guys.
Another thing I was thinking about: as teams have the option for keeping their secondary team for additional years, I do think they should be allowed to trade players from their secondary teams for additional years if they commit to keeping their secondary team and that this and the terms of the trade are explicitly stated.
So, let's say that I have Texas as my secondary team and I'm going to trade Buddy Bell. If I'm preparted to commit to keeping Texas for additional seasons, I can trade Bell for additional seasons, but I'd have to post a message saying, "I trade to Bell to albert. As I'm committing to keeping Texas through 1983, albert will be able to keep Bell through 1983." I would then be bound to keep Texas and forego my rights to Bell through 83.
If I didn't make such a statement, it's assumed that my deal of Bell only lasts through to the end of the season, even if I keep Texas.
