I would have taken that in a heartbeat. Burleson is a 1e20 which is excellent and more years than not will give you a .300+ OBP. The others you mentioned have more upside potential, but won't necessarily give you better offense. Personally, I think Burleson is an excellent choice at SS and then you could put that behind you and work on your other areas of concern.
As far as your waivers choices. I like to have Carter whenever possible. While there are other choices that are cheaper, Carter is one of the few guys in the 80's league that never dissappoints. I've had him on around 8 or my last 10 teams and he has been awsome every time.
I like Mattingly and Ricky a lot too, but I just feel there are choices that are closer to them in quality at their positions than there is with Carter.
I've been in a lot of leagues where Mattingly and Ricky have been dropped, and I've dropped Don a couple of times mself. I've never seen Carter dropped.
Other than that, I agree with pretty much everything Yount fan said, and why not, he knows a lot more than I do.
p.s. Bradley can be very good if you have one of his E or 2R card, and he can be awsome in a very expensive platoon if you have his two lefty cards. He's chancy in that respect but he can be very good. However, he is also a good candidate to drop now and konw that will be on the FA wire later because others don't often take a chance on him. If you have a LF who you happen to get a solid R side for, perhaps a cheaper one, but can't hit lefties, then Bradley can be an excellent early season pick up.
