Templeton or Burleson

Postby AdamKatz » Sat Jul 15, 2006 12:49 pm

Normally an easy question, but here are the facts:
Injury revealed Templeton to be in his 85 year (.280 avg, .330 obp) and Burleson has been dropped with no injury reveal (I think) batting .175 after 100+ ABs. His worst year is pretty bad (sub .300 obp) but should his fielding ability over Templeton outweigh his e batting ability? It seems like going for Burlson is a no-brainer, but that worst year's offense is pretty awful. Any suggestions?

Are you winning with Templeton? If so keep him. You pitchers will benefit from Rick's glove, but a) he costs more, but Garry is hitting. I'm suggesting you stand pat.

actually I have 31 wins. 3 people have 32 (including one in my division), one team has 33 and one team (in my division again) has 34.

Injury reveals have revealed a good Tettleton year, Gibson's best year (but it is a 4R), Dwight Evans best year (a 4L), one of carew's .400 OBP years and one of Guerrero's 3 best years. Sounds pretty good but injuries or stats revealed all of my other hitter's worst years and they have been replaced.

I also recently replaced 2 of my starters. I kept Valenzuala (1.54 WHIP but 4.12 ERA) and Carlton (1.38, 4.80) . I am playing in Riverfront so I expect numbers close to these even in their good years, but I might have their bad years. My bullpen isnt doing to well either. Gossage is 1.82, 6.93 in 14 innings and Worrell and Vandenberg aren't much better. Somehow I am leading the league in pitching with this mess so I am going to wait another 15 innings/20ish games (game 81) before dumping Gossage

I am hoping that the replacements I made together with what should be a really good offense will get me at least a wild card slot.

So, I understand that maybe I shouldn't fix what isn't too broken-its not like I got one of Templetons 2 really bad years, but I am wondering if I should pump up the D at SS. All I lose is 40 points of OBP. I dont think I care about AVG or speed. Either way, my SS is sitting at 8 or 9 in the lineup and all I want from that guy is to not get out and let the monsters at the top of the lineup get up again. Then again 40 points of obp is alot of obp.

Just checked the prices. Woops. Burleson is more expensive comparatively than I thought. I would be 100,00 short!

To get to Burlson, I would have to dump Gossage and with just 14 inning I am not sure if I am sure it is his bad year. So, I guess I am going to keep Templeton for a few more days and see what happens with Goose and some of my replacement players which still have less than 50 innings/100 ABs.

Keep Templeton.

Keep your starters, As long as Valenzula is getting righties out keep him. Think 1983

Look for a new Worrell and Van deBerg. Wait for Gossage to come around, but don't wait to long.

Platoon Gibson. Find some lefty killer (Zisk, Castillo). You need to improve a bit vs LHP.

Hang tough. Nothing a little winnign streak won't fix.

Valenzuala is .217 vs. Righties (304 BF) and .361 against Lefties (122 BF). Forget 83. I am going to keep thinking 82 or 85. (but probably 83).

With respect, to Worrell, I don't think he has a bad year, just R or L slanted ones. Vandenberg is .182 against lefties in 11 BF so I started platooning him against LH only. All of my relievers other than Moore are set to only face LH or RH. I know this isnt such a good idea but all of the RPs on the wire have already been used.

Had Zisk. Injury revealed 79. Worst year I think (considering his worst OPS year is a6L). I might put Engle in LF (I certainly dont want him playing C but Tettleton gets injured every couple of days of course). Part of the reaon I recently got Gaetti and Henderson (other than Molitor and every CF I tried being awful) was that they should improve my performance against lefties. Think I am going to start Carew and Tettleton as 1,2 in the order against lefties. No speed, but if tettleton doesn't get on base, he is likely to K instead of grounding into a DP. And with Guerrero and Evans coming up, who cares what base they are on. Even Tettleton should score from 1B on a HR.

Someone dumped Castillo after 11 ABs, but I could dump MYoung for him. If I had his good year, I think HAL would have put him in more considering all the injuries I have been having. (He has usually been making room for Engle).

I don't think I have ever had Gibsons best year before. His card looks like he should be around a .333 OBP against lefties. Is he not worth playing against lefties over Engle or Castillo?

Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I would want guys on base when Guerrero comes up.
Looking at your team, neither Tettleton nor Carew would be my first choices for the top of the order against lefties. In order to score when Guerrero homers, they need to be on base and neither one is doing that well against lefties.
In fact, I would probably bat Henderson and Gaetti 1 and 2.

I usually base my batting order on the cards I have and not the actual performance of the players.

Carew's OBP may b .306 against lefties, but, at worst, I have his .410 OBP 2R card which, I am guessing, can't be worse than a 360 OBP vs. lefties.

Tettleton's OBP is .338 against lefties but I know I have his 92 card which is an .382 obp 1L.

Gaetti is doing great but has only had 40 ABs against lefties. and if it is one of his two best years, I think he is more valuable hitting 5th. I might switch him for Tettleton soon, because Tettleton is also better 5th than 2nd.

Henderson is also doing better than expected but has even less ABs than Gaetti.

The problem I have with basing line-ups on cards and not performance is that while performance should reflect the card, it doesn't always.
Right now I'm waiting for Ryne Sandberg to start to perform up to his card. An injury reveal shows me that it is his 40-dinger season.
After 87 games, he should be pounding RHPs, batting around .300 with an OBP of around .360.
He is hitting HRs, 30 so far. But his BA is around .250 against RHPs and LHPs and his OBP is sub-.300 against both.
Based on his card, I would have him hitting in the 3, 4 or 5 spot. Since I have Guerrero, Dwight Evans and Murray, i could hit him in the two spot. But, based on his performance, I'm Tony Armas-ing him and he's hitting in the 8 spot.
If he starts to perform, I can move him up. In the meantime.
I have Dykstra and John Wathan both with near .400 OBPs hitting at the top of the order and Murray is moving up after a slow start. Evans and Guerrero are in the top 10 for RBIs because there are guys on base for them to drive in,
My offence is fourth in runs scored despite average BA, SLG and OBP.
I'm certain I would be lower if I was relying on the cards and not the performance to setmy batting order.

Yountfan, is there a Zisk you wouldnt play? I had his 83 (6L) year and kept him figuring he would still kill lefties but he never really performed. I would think the 79 card wouldn't be much better.
