Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

I agree with your rankings for the most part, BC...but I was a little surprised where you ranked both my teams. The Mets pitching early in the decade is not pretty (other than Scott)....and their hitting stars (Straw, Hernandez, Carter, Dykstra, Mitchell and Hojo) don't arrive until later in the decade as well.

Now the Pirates' ranking really surprised me. Most of my '81 and '82 teams will comprise of Pirates. I really liked their early decade hitting with Madlock, Parker, Thompson, Easler and Pena being the core....but I thought their pitching was very solid as well with Perez, DeLeon('82), Rhoden and Candelaria backing Scott in the rotation. The late decade Pirates are admittedly weaker, but even they have nice pieces like Bonilla, Drabek, Van Slyke, LaValliere and Reuschel for extended periods. It won't matter much, as my Mets will be dominating the league by then anyway  :)

The teams I was debating on taking instead of the Mets in round 2 were Philly and Houston. I really liked the star power Philly had with Carlton and Schmidt (and even Sandberg for a cup of coffee) but didn't think they were as deep as the Mets. And Houston's pitching is strong but their hitters just didn't do much for me.

Looking forward to seeing other peoples' rankings. Picking where I did, I really didn't have any rankings. I just went with whatever was leftover for me. Turns out, I was pretty happy picking where I did :D

[quote:fc7e6aafd9]The way I see it from the first league transaction is that Jablowmi made a commitment to keeping Atlanta for the full term of the decade by trading Benedict. (Benedict being a Brave for the full decade.)

Likewise, YF has committed to keeping the Reds through 1988 by trading Concepcion. [/quote:fc7e6aafd9]
Jablow and I talked about this under the assumption that the trade last only as long as we own our teams. He drop the Braves, I lose Benedict, I drop the Reds he loses Concepcion. We are both OK with this and I told him I am planning on keeping the Reds, Jablow is less sure about the long time ownership of the Braves, but through 1983 was mentioned. We both went into the deal with our eyes open

Yes, YF and I have no agreement re: future years. I'm banking on him keeping the Reds, with ED and others coming on board in later years, while I intend to keep the Braves at least through the Butler years. But, on both sides, who knows?

We'll may have to figure out how to declare whether we are keeping teams at the end of the year.

Re: BC's Rankings

[quote:ecbb57e274="BC Manager"]I thought I'd share my pre-draft ratings/rankings of all the teams. Basically, I rated every team by positions and by year and took an average. Not really a scientific system though -- all my ratings were subjective. I can see how some teams, such as LA didn't rank higher because I'm not big on certain players. As I mentioned earlier, I didn't even follow my system, passing up St. Louis to take Detroit.

1. Yankees (Sykes)
2. Cardinals (Crossing)
3. Tigers (BC)
4. BoSox (Sean)
5. Mets (Albert)
6. Blue Jays (BJS)
7. Royals (RR)
8. Astros (Crossing)
9. Angels (YF)
10. Brewers (Hak)
11. Dodgers (Jablowmi)
12. Orioles (BigA)

13. Athletics (Sean)
14. Expos (Jsamia)
15. Cubs (BigA)
16. Reds (YF)
17. Phillies (Jsamia)
18. Giants (BC)
19. Padres (RR)
20. Pirates (Albert)
21. Twins (BJS)
22. Indians (Hak)
23. White Sox (Sykes)

24. Rangers
25. Mariners

I don't want to get anyone's nose out of joint with these rankings. It was just my system for planning the draft. Glad to hear others' rankings or disagreements with mine.

The Yanks are far ahead of any other team, as Sykes no doubt realized. It was pretty tight from #2 through #16. I think we all drafted well.[/quote:ecbb57e274]

BC, you must really not like my team. Not high on LA (certainly understandable), but the Braves aren't even listed!

Not that anyone should put much stock into my ratings, but...Pirates and Mets should be a good combo. Pirates have one of the better selections of players early in the decade and the Mets have the best selection in the middle of the decade, and still good thru to the end. Again, very subjective though.

I'm sort of glad that I didn't have to choose between the Royals and the Blue Jays on my first round pick. If KC would have been on the board for me, I might have taken it but I am glad the way it worked out.

Personally, I think that getting the Twins in round 2 was a blessing all things considered. They've got a solid core of players that string through the decade quite well and help with SP in the mid years. They do compliment the Blue Jays quite well and I really like playing in the Metrodome. I'm also sort of glad that I didn't have to decide between the Phillies and the Twins in round 2 as well.

I feel I've got a solid ballclub for the decade that I can easily afford under an 80 million dollar cap. I don't have to share too many key players during the decade also so the competition during the autodraft will be a bit easier as well.

All in all, look for albert2b and me in the finals from 86-88. :P

Ooops...

Postby jsam9801 » Mon Jul 17, 2006 9:40 am

i guess this is what i get for being on vacation and not reading the posts well enough  . i thought that the 2nd team was only for that given year. i am happy with the phillies in 1981, but without a litlle creativity, i will be the whipping horse of the late '80s.

i am heading to the beach with my 2 teams and the rest of the league. should finally be ready to deal (after taking the kids in the water :D ).

Just a quick note in regards to my trade post a bit back. I am not looking just to trade for full decade. I'd be happy to trade year by year as well. So If you need a guy this year who I have, let me know.
