Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

See, my way to shake things up is to use the guys I protected on my roster instead of reaching out to you because you are not using a "common" player.

Guys who have played a HUGE part in my first two seasons include:

Matt Young
Mike Moore
Gary Maddox
Lansford
Eric Show
Terry Puhl

I'm available to list 40 protected players. I'm available to load whenever needed.

League Talk

[quote:23a07af0e9]The only way to keep the league going is a process which enables the weaker teams to strengthen in the off season as well as trading hot players during the playoff runs...but it also seems like few teams try to strengthen themselves when they are in a race.[/quote:23a07af0e9]

In my mind's eye, the mystery card in the 80's game addresses this issue quite well. A keeper league in the 80's game presents all kinds of possiblities season after season. I had career years out of Mike Scott, Don Sutton, and Tartabull. It wasn't like that in season 1. In fact, I had to drop Scott and Sutton to free up cap room to make other improvements.

I finished at .500 in season 1 and had a good run in season 2. Who knows what's in store for me in season 3?

[b:23a07af0e9]On trading:[/b:23a07af0e9]

In season 1, I tried to trade Mike Scott for Wade Boggs but it was not meant to be. In season 2, I ended up trading for Cal Ripken after attempting to come to a deal for Robin Yount. As far as trades go for me, that's par for the course.

I'm open to offers but I'm not going to trade for the sake of trading. I'm pretty comfortable with the players that I have and the backup plans for those seasons in which I may get a bad card. In season 1, I tried to sell since I felt that I was out of the race but in season 2, I didn't feel that a trade was necessary for the playoff run. Who knows what the future holds though?

[b:23a07af0e9]On the logistics of a supplemental draft:[/b:23a07af0e9]

Firstly, I'm not in favor of cutting the rosters and redrafting for the reason that I stated above: the mystery card factor. I think that the inaugural snake draft provided for some decent parity and you can always trade into other deals.

However, if parity is truly broken then I would be willing to visit a supplemental type draft. (Protect 40-45 guys and redraft the unprotected.) My problem with this is that it screws people who have traded into larger rosters (like UglyJerry) and I wouldn't want that.

The other problem is handling the logistics of such a draft. I don't know if we could use Penn's site to handle the supplemental draft player pool or not? But we're easily talking about a 160+ player pool here. We would probably have to do it on the boards, I think?

And it will be mostly comprised of the Gary Reduses, Dave Martinezes, and Joe Orsulaks of the player pool. Is it worth all of that?

[b:23a07af0e9]Other forms of league parity already in place:[/b:23a07af0e9]

I believe that the way we arrange the brackets after each season creates a good parity for the league as is. The bottom 4 teams from season 2 will be in the west together which means that there will be at least one playoff team that makes it that didn't before.

And all of the playoff teams are together in the east which means at least 2 of those teams won't be back in the playoffs for season 3.

While I disagree with almost everything stated above...(we would not be cutting different amounts of players...15/16/or 17 but not below 40...jerry would still have more players) I do not want to stand in the way of progress...I am loaded and ready to get started. I would like to consider a franchise move....what stadiums went undrafted? The Astrodome is killing any offensive players I may have. Am I allowed to trade in my stadium for one that is unused? I don't think we created a rule against it. I know I can't just carry 3...but can I turn in Exhibition for something else?

When are we starting....ready to go....anyone want to trade? would be int in boggs. need a 3b have depth at starting pitching but need another ace. will do 2 for 1 Could be looking for a 2b

New Season 3 Topic Coming

Postby bjs73 » Wed Jul 19, 2006 3:29 pm

I'll post a new season 3 topic when I get home from work and have had dinner with the kids. Look for it around 9PM EST.

The new topic will start off with the listing of the brackets and a call for everyone to check in with their availability.

What I'd like to do is publish current rosters to my website like I've done for the Double Franchise League so I'll be asking for everyone to update their rosters in the rosters thread and/or I'll PM everyone in the league my email address and they could send me an excel copy of their rosters that I could import?

Some things I'll try to accomplish before Season 3 is complete:

Accurate roster maintenance.

Lifetime Stats + By Season. *** (Will only be comprised of players that finished the year on your rosters since I can copy/paste/import those things fairly easily.)

Also, Ice:

You can trade for a stadium also. As long as the stadium deal is a one for one type transaction. (No one can have less or more than two stadiums each.)

I can't remember what was left from our draft but once anyone switches stadiums, they have to be committed to it for two seasons per the league charter.

If the league consensus wants to drop players, then I will not stand in the way. There have been some big trades, Pedro, Yount and others. It is like YF said "Stop overvalueing your players" the reason I wanted more players is to have the freedom of trading or dropping a player and having plenty to choose from. I will always entertain offers for anyone on my team if I think that it will help me out now or down the line.
