I've read on this forum that Carter is one of the better values at catcher for a small ball team. Well, if that's the case I sure hope he starts show up on this team real soon. He is absolutely killing me, he and Clemente both. Clemente's played in 8 of the 21 games and I am 2-6 when he plays and 8-5 when he sits.

Welll... I would not have Carter on a smallball team. His BA and OBP are very poor. Cochrane is a much better choice, IMO. If not Cochrane, I would rather have Schalk, Gibson, or Kling and use the $$$ to upgrade somewhere else.

As for Clemete, his numbers are not bad at all, and don't underestimate his defense. I don't see how you can complain about his production for the price, and his numbers will only get better.

Carter's value is HR power, especially vs LHs, low injury risk and defense, his BA and OBP (<.300) are often dismal. When you take Honus and Clemente, injuries are going to happen.

Slow early season starts for teams are not unusual, especailly smallball teams. I have a personal rule not to look at team stats until at least game 24, after that a weekly detailed look is plenty.

Based upon the numbers, your team will struggle vs RHs. At this point do not make any add/drops, but getting a good LH bat might be needed. A package deal with Carter and someone for a Rolfe or Joe Jackson might be attractive.

I was offered a deal for Cochrane before the season started, but I turned it down because I've never used Carter and was finally able to land him. I also love Carter's d, and maybe I shouldn't expect so much out of him offensively. However, I've noticed that Carter has only thrown out only 2 baserunners in 13 attempts! :shock: What a bust all around so far.

I've never used Carter, and I too was loathe to use him in small ball, but I was wrong.

I was checking out his numbers on other small ball teams and he rocks.
He usually hits about 30 HR's and bats in over 100 runs, plus his arm is great.

Don't just look at the base stealers he throws out, look at the number of stolen bases attempted, I bet it's lower than other teams. My guys just stand on first and whittle when he's playing catcher and I usually have about 3 good basestealers.

I have faced about 9 small ball teams that have won 90+ games; he's on 2 of them.

Not sure where you read that he was good for smallball. Carter has never performed well for me, though I know others love him. I would never consider using him in a pitcher's park. There are much cheaper arms out there that don't lose so much value there.

Here are his numbers for the first 30 games or so

I've used Carter twice. Made the finals both times. He is pricey for a pitchers park/small ball but he always stepped up big in big games (and playoffs).

I'd usually bat him bottom order vs. Righties and 4/5 against Lefties.
