I guess it'll have to wait since PBTR is maxed out on his teams, but I believe it may be a healing thing to do in the future ....

I won't be playing him for a healing thing. And I won't be doing any experimenting.

Yeah, this was the best of the Grindi vs. PBTR threads.  Too bad most of the really good stuff got edited out by Grindi.

And to think I was just a silent observer to this train wreck. And I never saw muttdoc use LMAO before or since.

Grindi's wife later threatened me, something about my "acid tongue."

Hey it was all good theater even if it was the theater of the absurd.

Grindi is now an active participant in the Whatifsports forums, sharing his same spirit of kindness, gratitude, and love of all humanity.

Googled the name Grindi. They actually interviewed him at what if sports, sim football.
Q&A with noted SimLeague Football user grindi

We recently contacted veteran user grindi to discuss SimLeague Football, rifles and hunting, real life football talk, and work horses..
WIS

Thanks for taking the time out to meet with us. Tell the WhatIfSports-Universe a little bit about Grindi?
grindi

I'm a retired electrician. Married, kids, grand kids, the usual. Play guitar, hunt, fish, do some woodworking, and build traditional bows.
WIS

Wow sounds like you keep busy. How did you find out about WhatIfSports.com and SimLeague Football?
grindi

I had been playing Strat at another site and the guy that took over was a real jerk. So I went looking originally for another baseball site. I tried baseball, Hockey and football. I found I liked the football the best.
WIS

Besides simulation sports websites, what are some of your other interests and hobbies?
grindi

Oh yea. I love guitar and own few really nice ones. I enjoy all the shooting sports. I've made a couple of custom rifles but found I like making Traditional longbows and recurves even more. I really enjoy shooting the archery courses but it's pretty hard to get around them since I got hurt. I used to be a professional bowler and was planning on knuckling down for a go at the senior tour after I retired. But managed to get hurt three and a half hours before retiring so I'm doing things that don't require as much mobility now.
WIS

We got Jimmy Hendrix, the hunter, on our website folks.

Why is it that you have only played SimLeague Football? What is so appealing about that game?
grindi

I actually played baseball and hockey first. I didn't really care for the way the baseball was done. I've been a Stratomatic guy since I was a kid, and I guess I can't do change very well. I really like the Hockey, and a few of the guys there tried to school me but I never found enough money to build the team the way I liked. I gave football a try and have been hooked ever since.
WIS

Which five people, past or present sit at your dream roundtable discussion?
grindi

That's a tough one. I assume you mean sporting people. Fred Bear, Bobby Orr, Johnny Unitas, Jerry Micaluk, and Babe Ruth.
WIS

Who are your favorite (football) players of all-time? /p>
grindi

Otto Graham, and Unitas head the list. Payton and Sayers for RBs. Ditka TE, Alworth, Max McGee, and Fred Bilitnekof. Never could spell his name right but what a set of hands. Ringo, Kramer and Thurston on the inside and Anthony Munoz and Walter Jones at Tackle. Give me Butkis, Huff, and Nitchke and nobody would move the ball against me. Denny Green, Ronnie Lott, Tatum and Houston for coverage. Front four would have to include, Page, Marshall, Olson, and The Dancing Bear, Ron McDole. Punter would Sammy Baugh and Kicker Stenerud.
WIS

What are your favorite (football) teams of all time?
grindi

'70 Redskins. Any Colts year Unitas played. He was always exiting to watch.
WIS

Did you play any sports growing up?
grindi

Absolutely. We lived and breathed sports. You name it I played it. After scool I discovered Hockey, Volleyball, Bowling, and Soccer. Spent the next bunch of years traveling and playing them.
WIS

Talk about your greatest WIS moment.
grindi

Probably my first Championship I won without help. I do some things different than some of the others. I combined what Iceman taught me with some stuff from Genco, Heavyhammer, and a few others, and the rest is history.
WIS

At this point, SimLeague Football is not as popular as some of our other sports. What can you tell users who may be unfamiliar with the game about the merits of SimLeague football?
grindi

It can be challenging. To newcomers I say don't think you'll come in and be an instant success. Like any other worthwhile thing, you'll start at the bottom. Don't come in with an attitude and the vets will teach you what you need to know. When it starts getting easy challenge yourself by thinking outside the box. Use, and win with 47 pass Stamina Bart Starr or build your team around your favorite player even if his stats weren't all that good. A few months ago everybody thought you had to win with guys like Brady or Manning. Now I see guys starting to use Otto and using a strong running game. I have to admit it feels good to have guys modeling their teams after mine. The good managers are adding their own ideas and that just helps fuel more ideas. After a newbie cuts their teeth in the 60 mil leagues they should definitely go to some of the Theme leagues. Some of the theme leagues are very difficult to build a competetive team. They attract some of the best managers and there is quite a bit of parity in them. This game can be challenging. There are also guys that get a successful team and they use it time after time. For me that isn’t much fun but different strokes. For me it's the challenge to consistantly win and the interaction with other great guys. Does the neihborhood poker game really meet for the poker?
WIS

Having played primarily in football, do you prefer open or theme leagues? If theme, which types of themes are your favorite and why?
grindi

They are both fun. In the open leagues I don't keep using the same front liners over and over. I like to build different kinds of teams. Running, passing, or a balanced team. I especially like building around Otto Graham. Great accuracy but low stamina. I proved you could win using only 1 WR, and 2 TEs. I don’t like the unlimited money themes but the others are great. They set limits and boundaries. Guys can’t play their canned teams. A lot of guys are afraid to play without Brady, Hirsch, Smith, Crow, etc. Theme leagues take you out of your comfort zone. I like the challenge.
WIS

How do you approach drafting players in SimLeague Football?
grindi

I decide first whether I am going to be primarily a run, pass, or balanced team. Then I decide what my primary offensive formation is going to be and draft for it. No sense drafting three high dollar WRs if I am going to run a 2-1-2. If I'm going to only throw the ball 20 times a game I don't need a QB that can throw 30. For 60 mil I then draft the 69 Giants STs, a 325 K, and 325 Sid Luckman as my P. Going higher in those catagories is a waste of money. Iceman gave me the most important advice a manager can use. Trim the fat. Because it is money on the field that wins, not money on the bench.

WIS

What offensive and defensive styles do you prefer?
grindi

There really isn't too much you can do defensively. I have certain things I look for in a defense but we don't have much control of the defense. Settings mean little. I've had high dollar defenses set Heavy Pass and the opposing QB completes 30 of 36 passes.

The most control is with the offense. I like the ball control teams. Run the ball and throw short passes to use up the clock. I believe like the old time coaches. When you throw the ball one of three things is going to happen and two of them are bad. I rarely throw passes over conservative because that helps completion percentage and cuts down INTs. I wish WIS would give us some kind of stat on offensive line penaltys. It seems some lines have more penaltys than others.
WIS

What do you believe is the overall biggest key to success in SimLeague football?
grindi

Trimming the fat. You have your work horses using the major share of the money and your bench players at the minimum. Money on the field wins. Be observant to what defenses the guys that are doing the lion share of the winning are using. There is a reason they are using them. Not just any defense will work even if it is the same price.
WIS

Do you approach the playoffs any differently than the regular season?
grindi

Absolutely. I look for trends in my opponent. I make sure my defense is set to his pass or run liking. My offense is already matched to my team so I usually don't tweak until half if I need to.
WIS

Which SimLeague Football users have proven to be your biggest challenge?
grindi

There are a number of them and I hope I don't offend any I may leave out. Genco, Heavyhammer, Iron, Coolmay, Tonyvoss, Zed, Iceman, but he's been absent lately, Zack, pups when he doesn't change his team, patswiligan, Bmc, Treetech. Really if you look at their names and it says HOF, you better be on your game.
WIS

What advice can you give to new WhatIfSports.com users who want to have fun and get the most out of the site?
grindi

Lose the attitude before you come in. I don't know any good players that like it. Be humble. Then ask the guys. Don’t try too reinvent the wheel. Maybe you don't like my style of team. Look around and find a sucessful manager whose team style you like and ask him politely how he does it. The guys here are great. My style is drawn from advice from a lot of different players. The community on the whole is fantastic. Just be nice.
WIS

If you were in one of our games, what sport would you play, at what position and how much would you cost?
grindi

In my best days it would have been Hockey and whatever Bob Probert, Carol Vadnay or Dallas Smith costs. I was a stay at home defenseman with a gift for the rough stuff. Vadnay and Smith were the guys that enabled Orr to be great. Without them he would have been forced to be like all the other defensmen at that time. But because they were so good defensively, Orr could be Orr. He was the greatest player of all time. Not Gretzky.
WIS

As you may or may not know we are working on revamping our SimLeague football game. What changes (if any) would you like to see. What do you like the most about the game? Like the least?
grindi

First and foremost lower the price of the defenses and raise the price of Brady and his common cohorts. The price structure is out of whack. The 60 mil game is all offense. Give us more control especially of the defenses. Maybe factor in a blitz percentage or something. Put more user defined playbooks in for the offense and put at least 2 user defined defensive playbooks in so we don't have to keep setting defenses one by one. Make Heavy Run or Heavy Pass mean something. It would be nice if we had defenive formations to choose from for specific situations but that would be a major overhaul. Just let the Heavy stuff take a bigger bite out of what they intended and the normal pass and run settings bumped up to what the Heavys are now.
WIS

Well its been fun going over SimLeague Football. Thanks a lot for your time grindi and good luck in life and in WIS.
