Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

Thanks for all the comments. I went with Britt Burns who was dropped after 1 game. Pretty ugly stats for one game. Something like 4 IP with 6 walks and no strikeouts.

At least with Burns I should get a pretty consistent performance. With Langston, who knows.

I like those reverse-lefty years on Burns's card.

Burns is 1-2 after three starts. One good, one awful and one that would qualify as a quality start just barely. My entire pitching staff is struggling including Clemens. 94 IP 106 hits 4.75 ERA with a WHIP of 1.48. Right handed batters are hitting .323 against him. Hopefully he will turn things around.

As for Burns, I am happy with what I've got out of him so far.

After 6 starts, Burns is gone. 2-3 record with an ERA of 7.48 and a WHIP of 1.84. Lefties are hitting .346 and righties .351 against him. Time to try something different.

By the way, I have Clemens and Soto in this rotation and they are getting hammered as well. The are number 1 and 2 respectively in the number of earned runs allowed after 66 games.

Clemens has an ERA of 4.99 with a WHIP of 1.51 and Soto has an ERA of 5.32 with a WHIP of 1.50. Soto has K'd 134 batters in 111.67 IP. I think I have his '82 card.

What did I do to HAL to deserve this?

If I didn't mention it before, I am playing in Fenway and I know some of you are going to tell me the ball park has a lot to do with it. That may have a little validity, but I play most of my teams in Fenway and Clemens five years on his card are all Fenway. The dice have to turn around, don't they?

Why don't you just try Langston if you're interested in him? On the plus side, he doesn't give up many HR's. On the minus side, he gives up a lot of walks, so there could be some men on base when he does give up a tater.

Try him. Why not?

Pillpop,

I would have, but at this point I didn't have enough money so I am going with a lefty righty combo of Leal and Deshaies.

If you are playing in Fenway, Langston could be good. He is one of a few SP in the 80's set with no BP singles on his card.

Thanks Sykes. I will have to keep that in mind for a future Fenway team.

Sykes makes a good point. It's worth trying those no BP-singles guys out in Fenway. On the other hand, I've had good luck with Deshaies; hope you do too.

But back to my earlier post-- sometimes I think it's worth following temptation and trying cards out-- especially if it's a player you've never used before. It's the only way to satisfy your curiosity. Each team is unique and maybe you'll get just the right card for the right situation.
