254. LMBombers - Bill Buckner (and his high tops) 1986
his iron glove, too!
Actually, even though I was pulling for the Red Sox in the '86 series (my favorite teams are whoever is playing the Yankees and Mets), I felt that Buckner really got a bad rap for that error in the 6th game. The Mets had already tied the game (on the Stanley wild pitch), so even if Buckner had fielded the ball cleanly, the game would have extended further into extra innings.
I have thought that McNamara, the Red Sox manager, messed up royally in the bottom of the tenth. A Dick Williams or a Tommy Lasorda would not have hesitated to have brought in a starting pitcher in a relief role. As soon as Gary Carter got on base in the bottom of the twelfth, I would have brought in Bruce Hurst to relief, regardless of whether a right or left handed batter was coming to the plate. Hurst had already won his two starts, and was slated to be the W.S. MVP had the Red Sox won that game and the Series. Even if Hurst had blown the save, he still would have been available to pitch Game 7. My two cents worth.
Before injuries ruined his ankles Buckner was a fleet footed base stealing OF for the Cubs and Dodgers...he could still hit long after his legs betrayed him..he had a very good career (by actual baseball standards not inflated Strat numbers)...took a long time but im glad the Red Sox made a large effort to welcome back Billy Buck.
Tomorrow evening I am leaving town on a trip. I will have less access to the boards and no access to email. I should be able to check in once in the AM and once in the PM as long as the hotels I stay at have a computer in the lobby. I'll be back middle of next week.
