In 1941 Lefty Gomez of the Yankees led the AL in WP with a 15-5 WL record .750 percent. Lefty's WHIP of 1.625 is the 3rd worst pitching performance for a season in the entire history of the Yankees franchise. Minimum of 125 innings pitched for a starting pitcher.

Interesting tid bit about Lefty Gomez. I think pitchers Lefty Gomez, Red Ruffing, Waite Hoyt, and Herb Pennock, never would have made the Hall of Fame if they had not pitched for the Yankees.
Earle Combs and Tony Lazzeri probably would not have made it either.

If we are Yankee Bashing I suggest Joe Dimaggio should be much lower in all time great rankings than he appears to generally be. New York media has been very very powerful throughout the years. Put Dimaggio on Cleveland and see how history would place him.

DiMaggio gets bonus points for nailing Marilyn Monroe.
Playoffs in all 3 leagues so far. No playoff series wins.

I'm putting together all time rosters for all 30 MLB teams for my SOM computer game..i'm up to the Yankees so far which is how I came upon Lefty's less then steller overall numbers..thank you Baseball Reference. The Yankees are one of my least favorite sports franchises period and i was getting bored with always having their roster overflowing with superstar seasons soooo while i did mix the offense up a bit ranking their hitters by batting average for the pitchers i'm ranking them by WORST WHIP first . Top 100 for hitters, top 60 pitchers 40 sp/20 rp..each franchise with only the Yankees getting the special treatment ..otherwise each teams player seasons i'm ranking by OPS and for pitchers BEST WHIP. Final season rosters for each team will be 10 hitters and 6 pitchers 4/2. I figure i have enough possible replays to last beyond my lifetime lol.

From each groupings of 100/60 i will mix the team player roster from season to season so players wont be selected from exact order of how they rank with the numbers i'm using.

To lessen my anti-Yankee bias I changed the pitching criteria..i now am ranking them by games started SP and games relieved RP

Interesting what if, to say the least. Larry Doby, of course, was the Indians center fielder for part of Joe D.'s career. Indians won the AL pennant and the World Series in 1948, so the Cleveland team (which edged the Boston Red Sox by just 1 game) would have been that much more potent. The Indians finished six games behind the Yankees in 1950; having DiMaggio on the Indians would likely have resulted in a few more wins for them along with a few more losses for the Yankees, so they might have been able to win the pennant that year, also.

Although playing on the Yankees helped, I would like to think that it was his 56 game hitting streak that cemented his legacy. Along with Marilyn Monroe, of course...
