Yeah, me neither. But perhaps they weren't a good fit for the needs of the other teams. Unlike many of the teams picked ahead of them, they lack a game changing superstar. They do, however, have good, if not great, reasonably priced pitching.
I was seriously considering the Cubs post. I had the Cubs exp in another of 2cityfan's post WWII theme leagues, but Banks and Sundberg were added. They won 91 games on the strength of 300 innings each from Sutter and Lee Smith.
http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/386428When I took the Cubs exp in this league, I figured that the Cubs post would be left if I wanted them, which would give me a pretty close match to my prior Cubs team that won 91 games and won the first round of the playoffs in a deeper league talent wise. Compared to my prior Cubs, if I took Cubs post, I'd have Banks back at ss and Sandberg back at 2b. It's a big advantage in these franchise leagues to have middle IFers who can hit. I'd probably lose Jenkins, but he's more than adequately replaced by ATG7 Prior. I'd probably also lose Holtzman, but Johnny Schmitz is a comparable replacement. Reuschel and Sutcliffe would remain in the rotation. The new Jody Davis card is a better fit than Sundberg and cheaper, too. The big advantage is that I would have gotten the new Andy Pafko card to play CF, which is a HUGE upgrade over the Dernier-Morales platoon for just $.36 mil more (plus another player to fill the roster spot).
Of course, my concern with the Cubs is that my former Cubs team had a putrid .246 team BA and dismal .311 OBP and picking the Cubs post wouldn't really address that.
Cleveland post was a better fit. LOTS of SP and a couple of stud lefties in the pen. Plus Boudreau and Doby would not only address ss and CF, but they would go a long way towards raising the team OBP and would turn the lineup over more, giving Sosa, Sandberg and the other boppers more chances to bop. Rosen is an adequate replacement for Santo if someone else gets the Cubs post and decides to use Santo and I decide not to go with Madlock. Having Doby also gives me a badly needed extra lefty stick. Besides, the Cubs team I had previously had its shot and fell short. It was time to try something different.
I liked Boston, too, mostly for Ted Williams (hate his injury though), but Stephens is like a poor man's Banks, Sullivan is good, I like Radatz and I like Boston's 3B choices in case I lost Santo to whoever gets the Cubs and I decide not to use Madlock.
Time will tell if I made the right choice.
