90.2 Free Agent Draft - NYY up, ATL on deck

"Immediately after a player is picked from a club the club that lost a player can protect any player still on their roster."

Using this rule, after Dave Stieb has been picked by the White Sox, the Blue Jays cause Roberto Alomar to be protected. This is under the rules for what happens when someone picks a player from your club, so my understanding is that this does not use up the Jay's first round pick.

You missed section 4(B)(2)(c) - Unless Steib is the #1 overall pick in which case Robbie Alomar automatically defaults to the SD Padres in season 2.

But really - Yes, since you lost Steib you get to protect one player at that time. You can protect Alomar and it is still your turn to pick.

That is my understanding as well, Geoff. Alomar was already on your roster from last season, so by doing this he can't be snapped up in this draft by anyone else. When we get to the next phase where you submit your protected list Alomar has to be on it or you could lose him in the AD.

So now the Yankees can counter to keep Cone, or protect another player from being taken.

He is saying it is valid for these two rounds and to make sure you include him as one of your 15 protected players after this. It does not count as one of your two picks.
