The Reds traded Lu Blue to the Braves for Lance Richbourg. In the rush not sure if the Braves drafted Blue or Richbourg. If we both drafted Richbourg, and Blue ends up on someone else's roster as a fill in, please allow us to complete our deal. Thanks. Sorry for the confusion.

Sorry if this post is too long or an overshare, but I thought you guys might find it amusing so here goes;

First off, let me say Rooska is a great guy, a gentleman, and I love playing in these leagues with him; as you shall see.

Let me set the context.

I was in Thailand, on the beach for 4 weeks. ( I get a month off for Chinese New Year).

All I do is; hot yoga, go to the beach, get tan, eat great food and that's pretty much it. The rest is wonderful lazy time. Reading, internet, movies, endless series of naps… repeat.

A whole lot of lazy time. Hours of it. Days of it. Weeks of it.

By week three I was getting pretty bored. By the last week I was practically catatonic.

Into this void of activity came this draft.I was really grateful and became totally obsessed.

The first pick happened on February Second. The end of my first week of vacation.

I’ve got nothing but time, so I plot out an entire draft strategy.

I’m scribbling crap out onto yellow notepads. Looking up stats. Making mock rosters. Checking my salaries against the cap. Tearing it all down. Ripping up papers and starting over. I was like a one-man pentagon; it was ridiculous, but I had the time, baseball is amazing, and so why not?

My basic plan was to shoot the works, gain one last playoff appearance for the Braves, and then spend lord knows how many seasons rebuilding.

I’m losing 3 of my starting pitchers and two starters after season two. The Braves will get no meaningful help from the franchise until season 4, so let’s just lean into it.

As George Allen said, “The Future is now!”

Dharmabums was nice enough to trade me the retiring Joe Jackson for my #2 and the under rated Cy Williams. Which means I now have 6 starters retiring after season 2; so I’m committed. Playoffs in season 2 or bust.

I look at my roster. My only weak spots are the salary cap and 1st base.

I panic. More yellow pad scribbling. How many .50 million dollars players are available? Will Fred Merkel really be my first baseman? Do the Braves really have a chance of going to the playoffs with this grab bag of players I have?

I turn the lights back on in my one-man Pentagon. I then came up with an answer; Lu Blue. Not only does Lu Blue have one of the coolest names in this season, but he has a great on base percentage. Without Lu Blue, the Braves are a 50/50 shot to make the playoffs. No one on my team is exceptional except for Cicotte, Eddie Collins and Joe Jackson, but the Braves are good or average at every position; except for 1st base. With Lu Blue, they are a 55/45 shot to reach the promised land. However, I was rapidly running out of cap space. I had to dump my back up catchers who were insurance for the glass-like Wally Schang. Everything had to line up perfectly or it was Fred Merkel time.

My biggest adversary was time. I’d have to wait for 23 picks and then pick a .50 starter, then wait another 12 picks and pick a .50 reliever. If those two things happen, I can pick Lu Blue. If those things don’t happen… “hello Merkel”.

It was February 4th. Four days later, Rooksa is a prince and takes Hennie Manusch to get the draft moving. I get Bib Falk; not bad. Five days later, we are well into round 3. I get some pants made at an Indian tailor. I get a great pedicure. I get my teeth cleaned. (By the way, I strongly recommend pedicures for men over 50. Those folks will make your feet look like something resembling what your foot looked like when you were in your 20s. Amazing.) I wait.

February 15th I finally get my 3rd round pick. Cup of coffee SP Deberry is still there. I nab him. That pick saves me from the 1.9 million it would have cost me to fall back on Dixie Davis. Meanwhile, I’m in week 3 of my vacation. I’m running out of things to do. There are only so many pedicures you can get. I’m as tan as I will ever be. I’m running out of restaurants.

February 17th, I nab Johnny Morrison. Life is good. Eleven more picks and it’s Lu Blue time. Nobody wants that guy. Everyone already has power hitting gods at first base. Who needs some throw-back high OBP 1st baseman who gets injured a lot? Nobody. Just the ole Braves.

Monday, February 19th (I’m a day ahead). I’m getting twitchy. I want to go back to work and teach my Chinese kids. I miss hotpot, Xinjinag food and good Bip n’ bop Korean food. I’m tired of yoga and the beach. I miss my apartment and my friends and co-workers. I miss my zany Chinese environment. My plane leaves on Saturday. The draft has finally moved into the 5th round. It’s go time.

February 20th. It’s been sixteen days of the draft and for me it has passed like the slowest of sun dials. And then, there it was. The last two picks. Lu Blue is still waiting on the list. My forgotten bride. I sharpen my pencil to write Lu Blue’s name in. I almost gathered the hotel staff around me to give a cheer as I made the pick. Money can buy anything in Thailand. Hello friends. Hello playoffs.

And then boing!!!!! Rooksa nabs Lu Blue.

I refreshed the screen. I couldn’t believe it. It was true. Lu Blue was gone. Cue Hall and Oates. My jaw literally dropped open. I put my money back in my pocket.

And then I started to laugh because it was too funny. All that build up. All that planning. All the waiting, the endless waiting. For nothin’.

It was too priceless. It was the greatest pick I never made. As if I was a starving man getting ready to tear into a t-bone steak and a bird swooped down, grabbed the meat with it’s heartless talons and flew off into the clouds.

I’m still lauging.


PS. Rooksa offered me Lu Blue in a trade. I was VERY tempted not to take it because the joke for me is just too funny. Then again, 55/45 v. 50/50.….

I took that trade.
