Toine: You've got it backwards regarding the Senators, Twins and Rangers. According to Wikipedia and BaseballReference.com, the original Washington Senators existed from 1901-1960. In 1961 the Senators moved to Minnesota and became the Minnesota Twins. So the Washington Post WWII player set contains many of the same players who were also Twins in the expansion set, such as Killebrew, Oliva, Kaat and Allison.
Meanwhile, not wanting to leave our nation's capitol devoid of a team symbolizing our national pastime, when the Senators decided to move to Minnesota, the owners decided to expand and added a team in Washington D.C., an expansion Senators team, which began play in 1961. The expansion Washington Senators played in Washington D.C. from 1961 through 1971 and then moved to Texas and became the Texas Rangers at the start of the 1972 season. Players such as Dick Bosman, Frank Howard, Darold Knowles and Del Unser have cards with the expansion Senators before they moved to Texas and are part of the Texas expansion player grouping. To the best of my knowledge, there are no expansion Washington Senator Post WWII cards during the early years of the expansion Washington Senators franchise for the period 1961-1966.
So the proper franchise grouping should be as follows:
- - Expansion Texas Rangers (includes Senators from 1967-1971 and Texas Rangers 1972 and after. Note that there are no players in the card set who played for the expansion Washington Senators from 1961-1966)
- - Post WWII Washington Senators (includes Senators 1947-1960 & Minnesota Twins from 1961-1966)/Minnesota Twins (1967 and after)
I hope this helps clarify our league's franchise grouping. - Bernie
