Re: Paul's Franchise League 1980 Draft

It's always interesting to me, the dynamics of these drafts in this franchise league format. The drafts always seem very unpredictable to me. There's usually at least one big surprise in each round of each draft.

For my part, I didn't think I was going to draft Grich when I started the draft. I had some other ideas. But as I look at where my franchise players slot in, and consider the balance between pitching and hitting (and fielding, which is a factor for me with this pick), the idea of drafting Grich became more and more appealing to me.

It's also interesting having the next card set for the 1980s. Lots of interesting cards to look at it. (Wow - there's a geekie strat comment!). :ugeek:

I hope that strat comes out with a 2000's mystery card set by the time we get there!!!

Speaking of infielders, I enjoyed drafting Speier or having him as a franchise player for many of the 1970s seasons. I liked him as a shortstop that often had a good batting average, when I started following MLB as a teenager in the 1970s. In real life, I was actually really happy when the Expos obtained Speier and Cash. At the time, I felt like that's when the Expos really started to be a team that wanted to win, going out and getting some big name, well known players at shortstop and second base. Over the many years of the Expos, the lack of solid middle infielders, especially at short stop, was a consistent flaw in their team. So, it gives me a lot of satisfaction to change history and draft Grich to play second base!!! :D

Hitting without fielding, or fielding without hitting.....

I just looked at their cards. Brooks had one killer hitting year with the Expos. It's interesting that we are using the DH for the NL teams, because it certainly gives you a different possibility with a player like Hubie Brooks.

It's fun to play out an alternate version of history with our teams! What if....
