Thanks Steve. I've made a couple of revisions. Buster Posey is 3 years at $2 million per the minimum bidding rule for free agents. The big one, however, is Ketel Marte who you have to extend for his current salary of $9,850,000 or take him to arbitration next year. Otherwise, perfect!

The Charlottetown Knights have come to terms or going to arbitration with the following players:

6+ years of service
1 Buster Posey 3yrs x 2,000,000

I thought this argument already came up that the 3-4 year guys got extended at top50% NOT top50% or their current salary (in this case the SOM salary) whichever is higher. Rule 9.09 this was discussed a lot earlier

It's what made the 3-4 year guys so sought after. really don't care, but this is a big difference in what was talked about before so let's make sure. Is it top 50% or top 50% or salary whichever is higher.

Can you point me to the thread? I don't remember it that way, but I've been distracted by life issues these past couple of weeks.

The rule is clear, it says the 4 year extensions of 3-4 year players -- ie the arbitration buy out -- is at the 50% fixed figure, without regard to the player's current card salary. It's different for 5 year guys, there the "whichever is higher" rule applies. Marte's 4 year extension should be at the lower 5.18 salary for his primary position, 2b, not his carded value of 9-10 bucks.

Phil,

it's rule 9.09 (a) nothing about "or current salary, whichever is higher".

here it is from the rules:

(a)     Extending Young Players: Players between 3-4 years of service time can be given a 4 year contract at the league average price for their primary position. The league average price is defined as the average price of the top 50% of players by salary at the same primary position on league 40 man rosters at the time of the contract offer, rounded down to the nearest whole number of players. This will eliminate their eligibility for the fifth and sixth year exceptions. Once a player has over 4 years of service time, they are no longer eligible for this extension.

This came up earlier and was a big reason why the 3-4 year guys were such hot commodities.

I really think it's same for 5 year guys too though teamnasty, just at top25% which is probably not worth it anyway. But I could be wrong I just don't see where it says "or current salary, whichever is higher" for the 5 year guys either...

if it does, let me know where as I don't see it....

In fairness to Phil's interpretation, below is how he earlier explained the rules early on in the league chat thread, BEFORE our draft began. He applied the "whichever is higher" language to BOTH 4 and 5 year contract extensions. So that's how he interpreted the rule's ambiguity, and I think in fairness we are all stuck with that interpretation.

B) For players with 5 years of service time you can extend the player but extensions must be at least five years long. Salary scale is determined as the league average price of the top 25% of players by salary at the same primary position on league 40 man rosters at the time of the draft. Any player who has a salary that exceeds this structure can have their contract extended (for at least 5 years) at the current salary they make (ie. Mookie Betts makes $10.19 million, he could be extended for 5 more seasons at this rate). If you do not extend a 5th year player you will still have control of the player next season but you will have to sign them to a one year contract based on the arbitration rules. He becomes a free agent at the end of the year.

C) For players with 3-4 years of service time you can extend the player with a 4 year contract at the league average salary for their primary position or at their current SOM salary, whichever is higher. The league average salary is defined as the average salary of the top 50% of players by at the same primary position on league 40 man rosters at the time of the draft. If you do not extend the player, they are still under your control next season and you can resign them using the arbitration rules.

The complete rule reads:

Section 9.09    CONTRACT EXTENSIONS Teams wishing to extend the contract of a player can do so in two ways.
(b)     Extending Players 2: Players with one year before free agency are eligible for an extension. Extensions must be at least five years long but can be longer. Salary scale is determined as the league average price of the top 25% of players by salary at the same primary position on league 40 man rosters at the time of the contract offer, rounded down to the nearest whole number of players.

Any player who has a salary that exceeds this structure, can have their contract extended (for at least 5 years), at the current salary they make (ie. Mookie Betts makes $10.19 million, he could be extended for 5 more seasons at this rate). [When I wrote these rules Betts was a year 5 player]

Both extensions must be offered prior to the November 30 deadline. Teams who are over the salary cap are not permitted to extend contracts, or increase payroll, until they are under the salary cap.
