We'll have to come up with a new term for what happens after the waivers.
I don't think we can call this a "frenzy"!
While we pause for a bathroom break and a new beer, I'll share what I'm trying to do with my team - at the risk of having you guys race in and get someone that I've overlooked!
I thought I'd try a strategy based on outfielders' arms (and a great catcher arm, as an adjunct). So I've got -3 or better in the outfield, and Harper's outstanding -5 in right field. I'm dealing with injuries by having Dyson available as a spare in CF, in which case Victorino would shift into RF, and Harper into left (if it's Marte that goes down). Dyson also serves as an outstanding pinch runner. In a further pinch (2 or more OF go down), Beltran can play RF. (I can also play Flaherty at 2b and move Zobrist to RF). I switched Beltran for Blackmon, to get more of a traditional DH. I figure that either of those guys would likely be in the lower part of the order (maybe 6th for Beltran), and so the power, base hits and clutch hitting of Beltran looks good.
I've chosen pitchers (with the exception of Liriano, Perkins, and to some extent Salazar) who tend to give up singles, especially singles that don't have the 2 asterisks **. My theory (hope) is that the outfielders arms will help to keep those singles to advancement of one base only. In accordance with my strategy, I have chosen Nationals park. My idea is to take advantage of advancing runners successfully, while limiting my opponents SB's and extra base running.
I'm not asking for free advice (although I'd find it interesting if provided), but I never developed my run production model to the point of incorporating these arm/base running/stealing factors. So this is not a numbers-guided experiment by myself - it's very intuitive on my part. I know that some of my more successful efforts have had Molina at catcher. The effect seems to me to be disproportionate to my simple math, but Molina freezing runners seems to have a very positive effect. I have no idea mathematically how the outfielders' arms will work, but I'm really going to enjoy watching it to see how it works out.
Unfortunately strat doesn't keep track of opponent's base running. I am going to try to do that myself, even though it will be a laborious effort!
I'm starting the Harper/Victory/Starling/Molina watch!
Thanks for listening in. I'm all ears if you have any comments, but don't feel at all obliged to share any trade secrets!
