1st NAKL Chat: LOCKED RULES ON PAGE 1

When I look at the rules for the NAKL this is what it says in the email Niners sent out wit hte most recent rosters.

7) There is no clock for Round 1 of each prospect draft. All subsequent rounds will operate with a 3 hour clock.

If there is no clock that's fine but it is different in the rules that were sent out on the most recent rosters and on page one of this thread.

You are correct in that first year or 2 we did enforce that rule, however in subsequent years, we've gotten the draft done in without it and there hasn't been a major stoppage in the draft. I haven't changed the wording in case I need to implement a clock, but my preference is to do the prospect draft without one, unless we have a major stoppage. Seeing as Madigan hasn't picked for about half a day we may have one here.

Happy with the prospect draft. Was debating between Puig and Dahl in RD 1, ended up with both anyway.

After looking through the history, here are some fun facts about the inaugural ’09 draft:

The first 3 picks were Pujols, Wright, and Reyes

The first pitchers drafted were Sabathia and Lincecum (6th and 7th respectively)

Grady Sizemore was selected 11th overall

Ryan Braun was picked 33rd overall. Milton Bradley was selected 34th.

Russell Martin was 39th…10 picks later Miguel Cabrera was drafted

Matt Kemp was the 67th pick

Tulowitzki was 108th

Verlander was 116th, King Felix 118th

Cano was 203rd

Well, that was me who took Sizemore, and would have selected him anytime after pick 3. He was at the time one of the premier young players both offensively and defensively, though injuries got the best of him. I believe I've recovered quite nicely though I think the majority of WTF picks are those late round "best available players for the current year" selections, even though they might never be better than your 34th best player on your team and never make your lineup, instead of using those picks to solidify your future. While some (if not most) never pan out, now and then you get your diamond in the rough. While a Rubby DeLarosa might never pan out (nice pick Schnoogens), it's at least a better shot than some 33 year old journeyman that happens to be useful in an $80 league but no business being drafted in a $200 keeper league. Mind boggling.

I wouldn't dispute that the Sizemore pick made sense at the time; no one knew the injuries about to derail his career. It's just strange to look back and see how highly he was valued in the not-so-far away past and to know that he fell far short of those expectations.

Agree with the other comments too. There's a balance between picking players to win now and picking solid players for the future. The most frustrating aspect of the game is guys who are really good but never put together a brilliant season that translates to SOM. Hellickson is an example that comes to mind - I think he's a great pitcher with some upside still to come but he always has a card in the $2-$3M range that barely rates as playable.

A short addendum: in the '09 new player draft Joey Votto was 16th, Ellsbury was 18th, and Kershaw was 29th.

Chris Davis (1B TEX) was 4th...his career has been a far cry from Votto's.

It was a major failure of a draft for me, as I took Geovany Soto 6th and then Joey Devine in between Votto and Ellsbury. Right after Ellsbury I took Liriano. Those 3 picks of mine were awful!
