Dave, I know from experience that what you meant to say is that a player who is carded to only one franchise and is on one of the 6 franchises not picked is an eligible free agent.

The six unpicked franchises are:

Mariners--------Bluejays
Angels-----------Rockies
Padres-----------Tampa Bay

So, for example, Tony Gwynn has 4 cards, but since they are all with the Padres, he's a free agent. On the other hand, George Hendrick has just two cards, one with the Padres and one with Cardinals. Since the Padres weren't selected, Hendrick's rights are owned by the Cardinals, even though Hendrick's more expensive card is with the Padres, and the Cardinals can use any Hendrick card.

The same is true also of Ken Griffey, Jr. Seattle wasn't selected, so the Reds own his rights, even though the Reds have just one card, and it's Griffey's cheapest card at that.

There are other players that could be used as examples, but by now we should all understand free agent eligibility.

To BDward: your explanation is right on; it was late last night when I saw the league filled but I didn’t go into much detail. Thanks for explaining to all. There is one other area that should be clarified and that is players who were assigned to different franchises and their franchise did not get picked. As in the past, those players revert back to their original team.
So Napoli goes back to the Rangers; Mo Vaughn to the Redsox and Dotel to Houston.
