Based on the waiver comments in the other thread (regarding Dozier), is this understanding correct:
Waived players signed as Free agents no longer follow team control rules (i.e. pre-arb and arbitration), based on service time.
But free agents signed during the draft do follow team control rules based on their current service time (i.e. Sean Murphy or Austin Hayes, etc.)?
No. Once a player becomes a free agent the signing team controls the player for the duration of the new contract. The six years of player control rules apply only to players who are promoted from your farm team (i.e. prospects). The COTT's service time only applied to the inaugural draft. If you cut a player, the team picking up the player controls him for the duration of the contract. If a waiver wire player has arb 1,2, or 3 listed in the 2020 contract column then their price will be determined at the time of the SOM card release. The player is technically on a one year renewable contract, but because they were cut by their owning team they will become free agents after the 2020 SOM season. Once a player hits free agency, the period of team control lasts only for the duration of the contract.
One additional note, the only time you can sign a player to a contract extension is in their arbitration years. All other contracts are determined through free agency.
