That's a fair question. Samardzija's off to a nice start in 2014, but neither FanGraphs nor Rotowire project that he can keep that up. He typically gives up a lot of home runs over a season and he plays for arguably the worst team in MLB. Eventually, that's going to drag him down a bit, too.
Myers, on the other hand, is a 23-year-old kid who is having a terrible 2014 after his rookie-of-the-year season but is still projected to be a long-term star. Looking ahead, the Purple Haze have a solid squad which should be good for some time to come. I would rather invest in a young multi-season star than an older pitcher who might be able to pull off a decent season before he regresses to his normal level.
