Andy - Every time I start assembling a roster in one of your concepts I'm reminded why I enjoy it so much. I don't know about the rest of you but always google the team and look at a few actual box scores, especially these teams that played in the WS.
So I picked the '68 Tigers. Sure I knew about them but not intimately, so taking a closer look added all sorts of additional layers to their run for me.
-Oyler was so bad at the plate during the season that Mayo Smith pulled in his GG CF Mickey Stanley to play SS the last 9 games of the season in an obvious 'try out' as they had clinched already.
-Stanley started all 7 games at SS in the WS...where's his SS rating!!! lol
-The Stanley move opened up a spot for 33yr old Kaline (injured earlier in the yr) with Northrup shifting over to CF
-McLain was gassed in the WS and got roughed up in games 1 and 4, finally coasting to a game 6 win...oh on 2 days rest.
-Lolich was the ace going 3-0 in the WS and besting Gibson in game 7, on 2 days rest
-SOM icon Gates Brown had 1 AB in WS
-futre HOF Eddie Mathews last season. Actually started one game at 3B during the WS. (where's the .50 for him in the set!!!!)
I laugh at some of the nuances to the game MLB plays today. Could you imagine a manager pulling Gibson in the 5th inning after he gave up his first or second hit?! WWE would break out.
The dip into history is cool
tks Andy!
