I understand your concern, Rosie. Your perspective has a number of logical points to it. If we did the league again, I would definitely give it some serious thought, in terms of which way to do it next time . But I've already expressed the answer previously and I know that many players queried me multiple times to make sure that was how the rule was being applied. Even if I thought you were right Rosie, I couldn't change the answer at this point.
But, here is the logic for the answer, recognizing your concerns , but nevertheless here is the logic:
1. All things being equal, it's generally more likely that the richer teams would be the teams most likely to have dual carded players shared with a non-picked franchise. I think I counted 2 Orioles affected, but that's after a quick search. But the Rich teams like the Yankees and Orioles signed players to free agent contracts later in their careers, and have more shared carded players than most other teams on average. It follows that they are more likely to have shared carded players with the 2 non-drafted franchises. The idea behind the rule is that the "enhanced free agency" will free up more players for the poorer teams to draft, on average.
Having said that, it doesn't always work that way. But, my quick review shows a fairly diverse effect across many teams. Baltimore and Cleveland seem to be affected more than most. Arguably the effect on Baltimore is consistent with the intended effect; Cleveland not so much.
2. I deliberately wanted to have *more* free agency. Even if it means some teams lose out on a player or 2, and it may hurt, they have the opportunity to go out and get other free agents .
3. Even if a player is available , it doesn't necessarily mean he will get picked. Teams will be busy protecting players , and the dual team carded Rangers and white sox will be early picks by the teams who wish to protect them.
4. Maybe not in all cases, but generally the franchises picked early in the draft are the strongest. They pick later in the first player draft round. The weaker teams will pick earlier in the player draft round 1. Thus, the weaker teams will get to draft earlier in round 1. They have choices they can make - all the more so because of the enhanced free agency.
I think this is logical. We'll see in practice here! But it's too late to change for this league this time . I still feel like this is the best way to do it for the weaker franchises.
