Spring Franchise Challenge

This is a two-season franchise series using the 6-team league format. Over the course of the two seasons of league play, 24 of the 31 franchises will be used. The NEL group will be considered a franchise for this tournament. The cap will remain at 200m for each season. All ballparks used must be from one of the franchises you select for each league.

Once six managers are signed up, a randomizer run will determine the draft order for the first season. A two-round, serpentine live draft will follow, with each manager selecting one franchise per round. Following the live draft we will run an autodraft, followed by regular waivers.

When season 1 concludes, the draft order for season 2 will be the reverse order of finish in season 1 - last to first place. The draft will be the same format as for season 1. However, once a franchise is used it may not be used again, and the players with cards from those franchises will be ineligible as free agents for the remainder of the series.

When you select two franchises for a season, you may ONLY use player cards that are found on your team’s drop down menu(s). The ‘any card’ rule is NOT in effect. For example, if you are playing the Red Sox and receive Babe Ruth in the autodraft, you may only use his Red Sox pitcher card.

Free agents: For each season, each manager may select a maximum of two players from the free agent pool to supplement their franchise. The free agent pool will consist of players from the unselected and previously unused franchises, including the pre-1900 group (Sweeney, Barnes, Hecker, etc.). Once a franchise has been used, it may not be used again, and all cards found on that franchise’s pull down menus cannot be used as free agents in subsequent seasons. For example, once the Red Sox have been used, Ted Williams, Boggs, and Betts become ineligible as free agents, and so do the 9.21 version of Fred Lynn, the 11.17 version of Pedro Martinez, and all others with card versions appearing on those pull-down menus. The pre-1900 group will be part of the free agent pool for each season.

If a player has cards for a selected franchise and also for a free agent franchise, and is left undrafted by the selected franchise team, the player becomes a free agent and is available to all.

If a franchise team manager drafts a player who has a card for one of his franchise teams and a card in the pre-1900 group (Keefe, Jennings), they may only use his franchise card. For example, if Keefe is drafted by the Giants, the manager may only use the franchise card and may not swap to the pre-1900 card at any time. If Keefe went undrafted by the Giants and was selected as a free agent as part of the pre-1900 group, that manager may use either of Keefe’s cards.

Trading is unrestricted. However, if you trade a player from your franchise, the receiving team may only use a card for that player that is found on the drafting team’s pull-down roster. For example, if the Athletics draft Mark McGwire, they may only use his Athletics’ cards. If they trade him, the receiving team may only use his A’s cards and may NOT use his St. Louis card.

If you get any designated free agent during the initial draft you must try to drop them before waivers. Priority should go to the highest priced players that need to be dropped. Immediately following waivers, the only players that can be on your roster are the ones with a card for your franchises, two free agents that were picked up during or after waivers, and players you legally traded for. Please clearly make your team name using the franchises you picked, like: Houston Astros.

Vote please:

For the 2nd season, should we have the draft order determined by:
the prior seasons finish, worst to first, or
do another randomizer for draft position?

I vote to keep how you have it. Last place in 1st season gets first pick in 2nd season.

My suggestion would be to let the team finishing last choose what draft position they want, then have the 5th place finisher choose next, etc., and the league winner getting the final spot.

The first draft position may not be the best one for the subsequent league.
